downgrading a site

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! So far we have paid for our site, to avoid ads, but now we would like to get the free version. How can we do this? We have been doing a blog about hiking through Norway and we would like it to stay on the web to inspire others.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The domain mapping has to be removed first. To cancel you have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard, cancel any upgrades, claim a refund for any qualified upgrades, and disable auto-renew. Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades. http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgrades

I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question Please subscribe to this thread so you are notified when they respond and be patient while waiting. Our purchase has expired so we can’t enter our blog. Do we have to buy another year to be able to downgrade it?

You can enter the blog by logging into the underlying .wordpress.com blog URL.

You have to be logged in under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access it.

If you are not logged in under the correct username then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into another account

The Admin login link to the dashboard for every blog hosted by wordpress.COM is:

    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

    * You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.

If the log-in information is lost you need to visit https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

  • Hi there,

Just to confirm, this is for the domain, norwaybyfoot.com, correct?

That domain expired about 57 days ago but it has not yet been removed from the site as at this stage it is still possible to recover the domain.

I can cancel the domain completely so your site reverts to the free address, but I will need you to confirm that using the account that originally paid for the domain – the domain was not bought with the username ceciliakald, but with a different username account.

If you’ve used another username for this site, please log in as that username and reply to this thread to confirm that you want to cancel the domain and that you understand that you’re giving up ownership of it, meaning anyone else will be able to use it.

Thank you both for answering! :)

I am now logged in under my friends name and he is the admin of our site. Ans yes, I confirm that we would like to downgrade our blogsite to a free one and hereby give up our ownership of it.

What do you mean by “anyone else will be able to use it”? You mean edit it?

We will be able to delete it at some point if we like, or?

We will be able to still work on it, write blogposts and so on, right?

    Cecilia

  • What do you mean by “anyone else will be able to use it”? You mean edit it?

The domain is separate from the site. If you cancel the domain your site will go back to using the free address, norwaybyfoot.wordpress.com. That address will remain yours, and the only people who can edit content on that site are the people who you specifically add as users. The content won’t change in any way, and you’ll still be able to add new posts, new people can still follow it, etc.

What will be cancelled is the custom domain, norwaybyfoot.com. That domain will no longer belong to you, and it will no longer open your site when someone clicks on it. That domain will them be released so that anyone that wants it can buy it and point it to their own site.

Are you sure you want to completely cancel the domain, norwaybyfoot.com?

Okey. Yes, I am sure! Thank you!

  • Thanks for confirming.

I have cancelled the domain. If you still see the warning message on your site, clear the browser cache and that should go away.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.
