Hi, we decided not to continue paying for roeslandpta.com, and the warning message about the domain expiration is confusing our users. Can it be removed please?

Do you want to use the domain somewhere else?

No, we’re not using the domain anywhere else. Thanks

Thanks for confirming that. Please be patient while waiting for Staff help as there are many threads that were tagged prior to this one.

  • I can absolutely help you with that.

Just to clarify, if you want to cancel your domain roeslandpta.com it can take up to several weeks for our domain registrar to release the domain, and it may not choose to do so. We can’t guarantee that your domain will ever be available to you again once canceled. If you have any intention of using roeslandpta.com again in the future, I suggest that you do not choose to cancel.

Please confirm that you understand and want to cancel your domain. Once you have done so, I will cancel it and remove the upgrade from your account.

Please let me know if you have further questions or if anything is unclear.

Yes, I understand and would still like to cancel. Thank you!

  • So, in looking into this further, there is an additional issue.

The issue is that the WordPress.com user account that you are posting from is not the owner or admin of that domain upgrade.

So you must have ended up with a second WordPress.com account (or another user ont he site purchased the upgrade) at some point. You will need to log into the other account in order to request cancellation.

I apologize for the extra step, but it would be a security issue to allow someone other than the upgrade owner cancel an upgrade. Particularly given how difficult it can be to recover a lost domain.

Hi! I’m the owner/admin and would like to cancel the domain upgrade. Alas, I keep getting caught in the labyrinth of endless confusion. Please advise. Thank you!

OR given that this site exists to serve an elementary school community/ a 501(c)3 non-profit, wave the $80 late fee and I’ll happily pay for them to have another year of an upgraded domain. I thought I’d done everything necessary for them to take over the site, clearly I did not. Thanks again.

The Redemption fee is set by the Registrar not WordPress.COM and is a common practice on the internet. I have never seen the fee waived since it is not a WordPress.COM fee and they just pass it on to you.

Sorry – but staff-ozmodiar can help you with everything else

  • @auxclass is correct.

The $80 fee is applied by the registrar and is standard for every domain registrar I am aware of.

    Domain Expiration

But I can help you cancel the domain if you’ll just confirm one last time that you do want to cancel and do NOT wish to pay the fee to renew.

My apologies for the multiple confirmations, but I prefer to be overly careful when canceling domains as they can be a real bear to get back.

Yes, please cancel the domain. Thanks for the due diligence and for your help. It’s appreciated!

  • I have removed the domain. You should be all set.
