Download a file when submitting email info in the contact form

Hi! I would like to provide a file to my readers if they provide me their email. How can I configure my blog so when they click in ‘submit’ their name and email info the file downloads immediately? Thanks a lot in advance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There’s no automated way to do this on WordPressdotcom.

Thans a lot for the reply. Ok, got it, that is not possible.

When they click in “submit”, then it goes to the page of confirmation the info (name and email) was sent. Is it possible to add in this page of confirmation a button to download the file? Thanks a lot for your help.

    Sorry for the late reply.

No, it’s not possible to edit that confirmation page either. We WordPressdotcom users don’t have access to the underlying PHP or HTML of our site.

What you could do is add to the page that the form appears on that once the form is submitted, you will send them a link to the download file.

All in all, it might be preferable for you to store that file on a site like CloudUp or Dropbox or Box or Drive. The reason being is that when a site has it’s privacy settings marked Public, search engines crawl and index everything that is in the site’s Media Library as well. So if someone knows the download file name, they could potentially download the file directly in the search engine and you would not know about it.

NOTE TO STAFF: In widget visibility settings we can create a widget that appears only on a 404 page, category pages and other pages that we don’t have the ability to edit. Would it be possible to include to that list of pages the confirmation page which appears after the contact form is submitted? Thanks for listening. :)

  • That’s a good idea, @justjennifer . I’ll file it for you.

And I’ll also upvote the idea to offer more controls over a confirmation page. Thanks!

Thanks @supernovia Even if we can’t have additional control over the contact form confirmation page itself, if it were possible to add a text widget to the confirmation page like we can on those other pages, it would also be possible to provide a download link in that text widget. :)

  • @justjennifer yeah, I think having control over the confirmation page would be a good start. :)

@supernovia – Alrighty then! If so then I’ll just jump in and ask for more control over the 404 page and category, archive, author and search pages as well. Might as well go for big if going at all. :D

  • Noted, thanks :) Some themes do give you a bit more control over the category page, by the way: some allow descriptions, for example. I don’t think we have a theme feature tag for that, but if you run into someone who need that, let me know and I’ll see what we can find.
