download and import file attachments
-
I’m trying to move from a wordpress.org site to a wordpress.com site. The instructions seem clear enough, but I cannot find the ‘option to Download & Import file attachments’ described in the instructions.
> Then upload the file you downloaded in step 2. After you upload the file, you can choose the option to Download & import file attachments if you want to move your media files. [1]
Where can I find this option?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @panesofglass,
The option to import can be found here:

Please write back if you need further assistance.
Take care,
Onur

Thanks for trying to help, Onur, but I can already import posts and (some) media content. I’m trying to find the “option to Download and import file attachments” that the instructions, linked above, indicate should be available after I upload the export file. I don’t see any such option anywhere.

Hello again,
If you have already imported the posts and only some of the media content seem to show up, this is because apparently the media is now imported automatically within a few hours or so (depending on how much content there is).
I would suggest checking to see if more media content seem to get imported every few minutes. If so then it will eventually end up importing all the media. Otherwise, you can add the modlook tag to this topic (see https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/contributing-to-the-wordpress-forums/modlook-and-tagging/ for more information regarding the modlook tag).
Hopefully this will help clarify and solve this issue.

Onur, that is very informative. Thank you! I’ll try just uploading the posts and seeing whether or not the files get imported. Will it fix the links within the posts as well?

I don’t see any media files getting imported. Reading old posts on this topic, it seems the only way to get media files imported is to use the Export All Content option. Unfortunately, my export stops at around 9 – 9.2 MB without ever including any posts and shy by a few months of images. Loading just the posts leaves the old urls, which still work and load the images. I was hoping to move my domain to wordpress.com, but I would have to manually migrate all my images and then manually re-link them, which would be a real pain.

you can try breaking the export into smaller sections – more than one export / import file is ok – sorry can’t remember the different ways to break the export up into smaller sections – if it can be done by the exporter or if you need to make some categories or tags up that break things into smaller bits – to big of an export file can be an issue when importing

Thanks for trying to help, auxclass. My bigger problem is that I can’t fully export my content. The export file is always incomplete. I can import posts just fine, but I can’t get any of the other content to import b/c it’s missing from the posts import file.

If the media isn’t importing, we may need to have you send us the file so we can try importing it from our end. Let’s get your full export file first, though.
Do you happen to have any pending spam comments? I’ve sometimes seen those cause problems with imports and exports, so if there are a bunch just sitting there, I’d delete those, empty the trash, then try making the export again. If you have a ton of them, there are plugins and tips that can help you clear them in bulk.
If any pending spamminess is cleared and you’re still having trouble, you could try exporting one year of posts at a time. Or you might also just ask your host if they can allow you to run this longer process so it doesn’t time out on you.

@supernovia, I installed everything locally and successfully exported. The total size was 13.8 MB. I attempted to import, and after several days, I don’t see that anything has imported, and the import tool indicates an import from another WordPress blog is still in progress. The message says to contact Support. I assume that’s what I’m doing in the forum, correct? Thank you for your help!
