Downloading media library

Two years ago my wife wrote a blog using wordpress about our travels. A publisher is now interested but wont make an offer until they have good quality copies of our pictures. We were horrified to realise that one of the sd cards is broken so we can not retrieve the photos….we did not back these ones up. My last hope is that the photos stored in images in wordpress were taken from the original SD and appear to be stored in their original sizes. We are desperate to get these back but there is no option to do this. I hear there may be a way by exporting from com to org but I dont know if this is true.

    Please pleas help.

    Thank you

  • Hi there. If you have a self-hosted WordPress.org site you can export your content to that site, yes. Note that you’ll need to export your posts/pages (there isn’t an option to export media files) and when you import them to the self-hosted site the media files used in those posts/pages will be moved over to the .org site as well. Note, however, that if you have any images uploaded that are not inserted into a post/page they will not be moved.

You can also manually download the images from your media library by viewing each image in turn and then saving it to your hard drive by right-clicking. It will take longer, but will give you much more control over the process.

Hi, Thank you for your quick reply. The problem with right clicking and saving that way is that they seem to save is a small format. In the media library it will say fore example they are 4600×2399 but when you download it’s more like 400×200. It’s the large sizes that are important. Will the photos files that are exported be the compressed ones or the origionals?

    Many thanks

Far as I know it transfers the original images you uploaded, but it is also possible to download the full-res images manually, though it’s a bit of a process:

When you open the media library, in grid view, click on the image to edit it. Then click on the link that says “View attachment page”. That will open a page that looks like your blog with the image on it. At the top you should see a line that says “Published on…” along with the original resolution of the image.

Right-click on the resolution and select Save Link As/Save Target As (depending on browser) and that should save the full-resolution image. You can also click on the resolution to get taken to the full size view of the image and download it there.

A bit of a process is no trouble at all. Thank you so so so much, it’s working and I can’t tell you how much this means!

    Thank you!

  • You are most welcome :)
