Downloading theme to computer

    Hi,
When I set up my blog, I purchased the vagabond theme. 9 months on, I am planning to move to self-hosted wordpress, but want to keep my theme. From research, it seems I should have downloaded the theme to a zip when I bought it? I didn’t know about this and have searched my laptop and it’s not there. Is there a way to download the theme now? I can’t see any option to on my dashboard and in the themes setting. Or, does anyone know if it is possible to keep the theme without having the zip file – e.g. if I export my blog first, will this keep the theme?
Thank you very much – I’m very grateful for any advice!

When you purchase a premium WPcom theme, you can use it for the life of your site on WordPress.com. See the Note on this page for clarification: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/premium-themes/

Some themes do have a standalone WP counterpart. I don’t see a download link on the theme’s Showcase page for Vagabond, but doing a little digging, it does appear that Automattic has it available for sale on Creative Market. Here’s the link. https://creativemarket.com/automattic/8633-Vagabond

Jennifer – Thank you so much for your help and speedy reply. That’s a shame – I knew very little when I set-up and must have misunderstood. I really can’t justify paying again, so I guess will have to try and brave making some nice changes to a plainer template / theme and use plugins etc. to get it looking how I want. This fills me with dread TBH but needs must!!

  • Hi there! As Jennifer mentioned, WordPress.com themes cannot be used on self-hosted sites. However, if you purchase a Guided Transfer, the Vagabond theme will be included with that.

I hope this helps clear things up! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

@ryancowles-Wow! That’s new. I understood from previous Staff replies and the Support doc that the Guided Transfer only included free themes and in fact the site owner would need to change to a free theme in order to use the Guided Transfer.

I purchased a premium theme at WordPress.com. Will it be transferred?
Premium themes purchased at WordPress.com are only valid here at WordPress.com. If you decide to purchase and upload the self-hosted version of a premium theme you were using at WordPress.com, your WordPress.com theme customizations most likely will not be transferred as the underlying settings of the theme are usually not equivalent.

    Have I misunderstood?

I’m on the same page that justjennifer is on and I have subscribed to this thread.

    Bold text inserted by me:

(Note: If you don’t see the Guided Transfer option on that page, you likely have a Premium Theme or use Custom Fonts, which do not transfer. If you use a Premium Theme, you’ll need to switch your site to a free theme. If you use Custom Fonts, you’ll need to switch back to your theme’s default fonts. Once you do, you can add the Guided Transfer upgrade to your shopping cart.) http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

  • Sorry for the confusion! Most premium themes can not be included as part of a Guided Transfer. However, a few of the premium themes created by Automattic (including Vagabond) can be. It’s worth noting that these themes are exceptions to the rule, and by no means the norm.

    I hope that clarifies things!

@ryancowles-indeed, thanks for the clarification and an update/clarification to the relevant Support doc would be appreciated.

    Got it! Thank you. :)

  • You bet! I’ve made a note about the support doc, so we’ll try to get that updated as soon as possible. Thank you both for the help!
