Downloading Usable Themes… Help!
-
Hi, I am very new to this and have no clue what I’m doing. I have purchased the upgrade and downloaded some free wordpress themes online that do not work properly. I hosted all the images and that part works fine – but the page isn’t arranged properly. I’ve seen a few comments here and there about wordpress.org themes vs. wordpress.com themes, but when I’m searching for themes online they don’t specify one way or another.
Can anyone please tell me where I can look for themes that WILL work here on wordpress.com?? Or tell me what the heck I’m so clueless about? :) Thanks!

The only themes you can use here on wordpress.com are the ones listed at presentation > themes in your admin dashboard. You cannot upload themes from off the web to a wordpress.com blog. Themes here on wordpress.com have to be modified to run on this multi-user platform and so that they do not introduce security holes that could effect all users.

Ok, so am I understanding correctly then that the only way to use the themes is on wordpress.org, but with wordpress.org you have to host on your own domain? So if I want a blog already set up, I am restricted to only the themes availavble here?

The upgrade you purchased (I’m assuming it was the CSS upgrade) allows you to edit the CSS on the existing themes listed under presentation > themes.
CSS is theme specific and you cannot apply the CSS from one theme to another theme.

Yes, if you want themes that are not under presentation > themes you would have to self-host your own blog.
The appearance of the themes here can be customized using the CSS upgrade, and people have done some pretty amazing things with them. The Sandbox theme is the most wide open to customization, but it takes quite a bit of experience to make major changes to the CSS. Changing a font, or background colors and such is pretty simple though.

Ok thanks for your help! I am starting to play around with changing some colors… I see I can put in an image for my background or header but have no idea how to create an image that will be exactly the right dimensions for those things to work out properly – any suggestions?

I’m not much up on CSS and such, just a small-time hack. Perhaps someone else with more experience will drop in and give you an idea.
There are lots of CSS tutorials on the web and this FAQ may help you: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/08/15/where-can-i-find-css-customization-help/
