downloading wordpress.org software

Hi! Last month I set up my blog with my own domain name by mapping it here to WordPress.com. I’m finding now that there are many HTML features that I used over at Blogger that I cannot use in the current set-up. In reading here, it looks like I need to download the WordPress.org software but I cannot find the answer to my specific questions which are:

–Once I have downloaded ths software, will I have to transfer everything over to a “new” site? Or does my computer just recognize that and interface both the .com and .org setups?
–My husband is relatively computer savvy (me, less so) and he is somewhat unsure about downloading the software on to our computer. Additionally, he is not familar with the .srq files, etc. and even using the online instructions it is confusing. Are we looking in the wrong place and how “safe” is the software?

    Thanks for your help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The .ORG software has to be installed and configured on a third-party hosting site such as godaddy or dreamhost, etc. You will also need to point your domain name to the new host and then transfer your posts, pages, comments, etc., over to the new blog: http://support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org .

Figure an average monthly cost of around $10 to $25 (figuring in the cost of your domain name as well).

All installations, all upgrades, all troubleshooting and fixing of problems will be your responsibility at that point. You will also have to make sure to do an entire backup of the site at least weekly, including the database so that if the host’s server crashes and they do not have a current backup, you can restore from your backup.

Also, the wordpress.ORG software is supported at http://wordpress.ORG/support/ .

Thanks for your reply. I guess I’m still a little confused.

I purchased my domain name last year through a third party host. I found their templates not what I was looking for so never did anything with it until now. In remapping my domain name over here to WordPress.com, does that mean the main benefit is that I have my domain name and not the .wordpress.com attachment to the name? Or are there other benefits to it that I am missing? I just want to make sure I’ve made the move for the reasons I was intending . I actually haven’t let my readers know about the move yet since I’m still tweaking some design stuff.

BTW, I do know that WordPress.org stuff is supported at that site but since I don’t have it yet (or am unsure if I ever will), I am still a WordPress.com user so post here. :-) TIA for your help!

The only thing domain mapping does is to take the wordpress.com out of the URL for your blog here. There are no other benefits.

Self-hosted blogs, have freedoms you cannot get here such as the ability to use themes found out of the internet, and plugins, and the freedom to completely customize things as you wish. There are also no restrictions whatsoever on advertising or selling things.

Self-hosted blogs though have additional responsibilities that the blog owner has to take care of whereas here, those things are taken care of for you.

Ok, thanks! That does clear up a lot. My site does not generate enough traffic right now to justify the monthly costs that would be associated with downloading the WordPress software and using that…bummer! I have advertisers at my Blogger site so now need to decide what to do and do a little more research. Thanks again!
