Downsides of “Be the master of your own domain”

I read that about having my own domain name, and it sounds good, but I am wondering about a horrible downside:
All of the people and organizations who know me by lornakismet.wordpress.com are going to get cut off from me! Some, I might not even know about!!

Am I wrong to be concerned about losing contact with people?

If your domain is on wordpress.com, there are no downsides, since your wordpress.com URL will automatically redirect to your domain URL. If you are setting up shop somewhere else you can also have your wordpress.com URL redirect to your domain URL, although at a cost. Or you can leave a last post with the new URL in it saying you that you have moved, also consider leaving a note in your sidebar. Your most devoted readers will follow you anyway, but you may lose some passer-by readers. You may also consider informing people and organizations about your new address. Using Google Webmaster Tools or even the wordpress.com stats you may even track down incoming links and inform the site owner that they should change their link. But overall, I wouldn’t worry. As long as you leave a note to inform your regular readers, the Internet is simply to vast to be concerned with every possible stopper-by.
