Draft Revision turned Disaster

  • Unknown's avatar

I was working on a draft, copied and pasted a picture, pressed undo and nothing happened. Everything was gone. How can this be so inefficiently designed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

I’m not sure what happened… Do you see the information saved in a revision?

Please let me know what the post title is so I can have a better look at it.

    Hi there.
From what I’ve researched is that, since it was a saved draft, and not a publish post, it only saves the most current version. I had it on autosave which was working fine. But then for some reason when I adjust a picture, it erased the whole thing. I tried to restore it by pressing Undo and Back, but to no avail. I then saw that it was saved with no way of accessing any “History” button.
The history button is there now, because I’m clicking save manually. But I wanted to know if there is any cache of the work I did on the server, as the draft took me quite a while to put together.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

Unfortunately, we don’t have a way to restore the post from our cache :(

I’ve seen a few other reports of this and trying to replicate it on my end to get any underlying issues resolved and prevent it from happening again.

To help me out could you let me know what browser and OS you’re using? If possible, please write out step-by-steps that you took before the content disappeared.

What was the title of the post? You mentioned working on it for a while so I’m wondering if the age of the draft may be what I’m missing in my test.

Looking forward to hearing back from you so we can get this resolved.

    Hi There!
Sure, I’m using Chrome on Windows 10.
I had left the Tab open for about 5 days, from last Wednesday till Monday, working on it sporadically.
I found that if I wish to insert a picture into a post and have text after, I would have to make 2 blocks of text *can consist of just one letter, placeholder you know*, and then insert the picture in between. Otherwise If i added a picture at the end of a text block, I wouldn’t be able to type anything after.
That was manageable, as I did it for my other 2 posts.
This time, I inserted the image following this rule, and there were no problems. However, I wanted to move it one paragraph up.
When I moved pressed control X, for Cut, everything vanished, even though only the picture was highlighted.
I pressed Paste and only the pictures caption showed up. I kept pressing Undo but it said Autosaved at the top and I couldn’t click back on the browser either. It was essentially gone and saved over, but I had no idea how. It definitely wasn’t on select all, as I used a mouse to highlight the picture etc, and Im proficient and document processing.

title of the post, well its a draft so you can’t find it. it was “Spirits and Incantations Pt. 1: Approaching Gin”.

I’ve given up on getting it back, but you’d blow my mind if you’re able to. It took quite a bit of research *sigh*.

Thank you for your time and consideration :)

  • From what I’ve researched is that, since it was a saved draft, and not a publish post, it only saves the most current version.

Every automatic or manual save while in draft should be stored as a revision in the history. In other words, the moment that draft saved for the first time, the History option should have appeared for you in the editor.

Looking at your last comment, that does not appear to have been the case, correct? The revision history for the post also goes back only two days, not five, which tells me something prevented autosave from working correctly. This can sometimes be caused by a browser caching issue, but I don’t think it’s directly related to the disappearing content – I’ve seen other cases of disappearing content where we were able to restore it from the revision history, but in your case the content disappearing looks like it happened on a post where autosave also failed, which is unfortunate as that means you don’t have the backup you’re supposed to have if something goes wrong like this.

Unfortunately there’s no way for us to get the missing content back, as it never made it to our servers to begin with.

I found that if I wish to insert a picture into a post and have text after, I would have to make 2 blocks of text *can consist of just one letter, placeholder you know*, and then insert the picture in between. Otherwise If i added a picture at the end of a text block, I wouldn’t be able to type anything after.

That should not happen at all. Can you please try starting a new post and check if it still happens there as well? Also check if the autosave triggers the way it should.

If these problems also happen in the new post, check if clearing your browser cache makes any difference to either the image insert issue or the autosave issue.
