Draft wiped

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been working on and off on an article for a few months now. As I was moving the position of an image in the article today, the entire article wiped and is now 0 words. I can also no longer see the History button, so I cannot seem to restore the article to one of its past versions, as I have done in similar situations in the past.

I read other articles on the forums corresponding to the same issue (e.g., https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/enable-revision-history-for-drafts/) where it is suggested to clear browser cache as a first step. I’ve tried this, as well as opening the article in a different browser. Neither helped.

So, following the advice given in the other thread, I’m supplying the title of the article: ‘Historical hypotheticals: Part II (Clark, Donohue, Revson, Kubica)’. I would greatly appreciate any technical assistance in restoring it. Thank you.

  • Hi –

I understand how frustrating this can be. Taking a look at the site, I can see that post is in draft mode. Unfortunately, there is not any text or images or history for me to restore.

The only content associated with the posts are the categories and tags used.

Can you tell me a little more about the steps you took leading up to the discovery that it was all gone — For example, did you paste anything in to the post? Edit something, etc… That will be a big help.

Which web browser were you working from? Could you also include the version numbers.

I’ll see what I can do with the information you send along. Thanks.

Thank you for getting back to me. The error occurred while I was working on the document in Chrome (current update). I was moving an image from below one paragraph to another, when the document wiped. Ctrl+z did nothing to revert the wipe.

It’s strange to me that there is no revision history, because I’ve worked on the article on and off for several months, with many time gaps in between where I no longer had the document open in any browser and had to log back in (sometimes from different computers) to re-open and edit the document. That implies to me that some save must have existed on the WP side.

I’ve found an older text version of the article, so I guess I will work from there, and always back up outside of WP going forward. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

Can you also please confirm whether you’ve been using the editor at My Site ->Blog Posts or the one in WP-Admin?

I usually have used the editor accessed by clicking the “Write” button near the top right of the screen, then clicking the circled number (for the number of drafts) near the top left of the screen. But I’ve probably used both at some point.

    Hi f1metrics,

But I’ve probably used both at some point.

Thanks, that means you were using the editor at My Sites.

I’ve looked into this and a lack of revisions means the content wasn’t saved to our servers so unfortunately, we are unable to recover it for you. I’ve passed this information on to our developers so they can take a closer look at what may have happened here. Can you confirm your operating system version (available on supportdetails.com) so I can pass that on too?

In the meantime, please let us know if you run into any more issues.
