Drafts are no longer saved?

Can someone tell me how to default to the former “New Post” format? I began writing a long post but got sleepy. So as I’ve done now for several years, I simply closed the window thinking a draft had been saved. Nope. I realize it gives you a flash message when it’s saving a draft, but I wasn’t watching for it.

I also don’t like the new page for creating posts. It’s unpleasant. So just wondering if WP no longer saves drafts, and especially would like to know the way to post in the old “new post” box.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When you create a post, on the top right hand corner there is “Switch to classic mode.”

PS – one of the first things I do is “Save Draft” and the last thing I also do is “Save Draft” – I don’t trust auto anything – I also save during the writing and editing process – actually I save draft before I do anything – hold over from the M/S DOS days

AND before I publish a post I select ALL the text in the text box, hit Control C, and then hit publish while it’s still highlighted. That seems to force it through, for some reason. That’s an eight year old workaround, by the way. If it fails, at least you have the contents on your clipboard and can just paste them.

Thank you so much @raincoaster and @auxclass. Great suggestions. If I’m posting something to my science blog I always copy / paste, but my other blog’s used more for short rants so I forget. I’ll definitely use classic mode and now I know there’s a manual save!
