Drafts keep getting overwritten by completely different other drafts

I don’t understand what on earth is going on. I’ve been editing drafts as always for the past few months with no issues. But now for the past week, I keep having drafts being completely overwritten by other drafts. Like, I’ll edit Draft A. Then I’ll edit Draft B. I go back the next day to edit Draft A. The title and feature image to Draft A is completely intact as normal, but the text has been completely overwritten by Draft B.

I lost two drafts that I spent days and days on because of this issue. No, I didn’t do anything like copy and paste entire posts. I was just doing little edits on each draft, and then this started happening.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s a strange issue. Can you provide some titles of posts this happened on for Staff please?

I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. Title #1 is “Why Blow Up (1966) is the Only Art House Film Worth Seeing.” The entry that I had for this post was completely overwritten with this draft, “In Defense of George Lucas [Warning: Rant].”

Title #2 is “How Hitchcock Jumped the Shark with Psycho.” Its entry was completely overwritten by the draft I had for “Why Blow Up (1966) is the Only Art House Film Worth Seeing.”

I am using the latest version of Chrome on Windows 7 if it helps any.

  • HI there,

With the Hitchcock post I can see in the revision history when the content changed:

    https://filmsdeconstructed.wordpress.com/wp-admin/revision.php?revision=14647

But in the other post it appears you updated/resaved the post so many times after the change that the original version has been pushed from the revision history already so I can’t see when the change occurred. Before you restore the Hitchcock post to the original version, please make sure you copy the Blow Up content and paste it back into the correct post.

As to how this happened, the revision history doesn’t show, so I please need some more information from you.

What editor are you using? WP-Admin or My Sites? Did you at any time edit these posts on a mobile or desktop app?

If you can remember, please give me the exact steps you followed when writing and editing these posts. To figure out what’s going on, I first need to be able to replicate the issue, and to do that I need to know exactly what you did so I can check if doing the same thing causes the same issue on my end.

We haven’t had any other report of this, so either there are very specific steps to trigger this bug, or the problem is in your browser. To rule out a browser issue, please clear your browser cache and cookies, and then try repeating the steps from before. If it happens again, we’ve ruled out the browser as the cause.

I use “My Site.” I login and click the number next to the “Write” button to select a draft from the drop down list. I click on the draft and edit the post, then save. (Or it saves on its own.)

I don’t use the left side bar to select drafts, always the “Write” button in the upper right hand corner.

90% of the time I edit on my desktop. The other times on a tablet, but I don’t remember what I was using the week this started happening. I might have used a tablet in the morning then gone back and edited on the desktop later but I can’t be sure.

  • Okay, so you edit your drafts directly from the Write button, and not from the list at https://wordpress.com/posts/drafts ? That might be the key here.

I’ll try to replicate this bug on my end so I can report it. I’ll let you know what I find or if I need any more information.
