Drop Caps and formatting text
-
Hi,
I want to work on making really interesting looking text on my pages and posts. I like the drop cap as exemplified here: http://www.pearsonified.com/themes.
I am on wordpress.com at http://tritoncommunities.com , thought I would make drop cap text in a text editor like adobe illustrated and then learn how to transform to HTML and then use that HTML in my wordpress.com blog/page.
Thank you for your help!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m sorry but you failed to state whether or not you have the CSS upgrade. Do be aware that we cannot access, let alone edit the template and theme files on wordpress.COM free hosted blogs, with or without the CSS editing upgrade.
If you are considering purchasing the CSS editing upgrade and doing the work yourself you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/editing-css/Important facts:
1. CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
2. The CSS upgrade does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template.
3. The CSS upgrade must be renewed annually and if you do not renew the CSS editing will be gone. The theme will revert back to the original CSS.
4. This post contains important information for those who do have the CSS editing upgrade. > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/I recommend that you don’t buy the CSS editing upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS, because you must be prepared to do the work on your own as there is no Staff support and very little Volunteer support.

Oh yeah! I’m getting into HTML and CSS! Reading your blog timethief! Love it.
I also have all the upgrades WordPress.com sells, including CSS.
Thank you very, very much for your very complete answer.

You can add it with HTML. Switch to the HTML editor and use span tags around the first letter of the paragraph that you want to appear larger. Here’s an example:
<span style="float:left; font-size:3em; line-height:1; margin-right:5px;">T</span>he quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. -
@halluke
