Your site menu locations are determined by your theme.

You can find more information about what your theme supports here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/hemingway-rewritten/

To see how Custom Menus work on WordPress.com, please refer to the following support page:

If you’re not satisfied with your theme’s menus, you may want to explore other themes:

Hello thanks a lot for help! I don’t know if i’m just really not that great with websites, but I still cannot get it to do what I want. I read the page and saw what my theme supports but I cannot create a drop down menu still. I also cannot get my posts to under the other menu categories. I am super confused. Can you help?

  • Unknown's avatar

Also, if you take a look at my blog you see the side bar where i’ve got the different menu categories (Thailand, Cambodia, Weddings, Etc) and i’ve only managed to get one post so far to underneath those categories. I want those though to be drop down menus, how can I do that? Also, when you click the post under the Thailand category called “Khanom- The land of the pink Dolphins” it takes you to a page without the actual blog post on it. I’m so confused, why isn’t the post showing up when you click it from there? if you click on it from recent posts or archives, it shows up.

Have you looked at the Custom Menu page I linked to?

    Menus

At present, you don’t yet have a custom menu set up for your site, and it sounds like that is what you want to accomplish:

    https://fareastandbeyond.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

In regard to drop-down menus, make sure you check out the following part of the support page:

Hi again. Thank you for the help and the links. I have visited them yes but I am still confused. I thought that I did have custom menus set up for my site and you are saying I don’t. What are the menus i’ve created considered then? I’ve created several of them (Thailand, Cambodia, Working Abroad, Siem Reap, Travel Tips, Weddings). I want those to be the main menus on the side bar and then when you hover over them or click them there are drop downs of the different posts I have done regarding those subjects. Also, what is the difference between pages and posts? I’ve noticed I can only add pages to my menus rather than posts. Sorry if I’m annoying and just missing something that’s really easy. Hope you can help.

Hi again Paul. I’ve just gone and looked at your personal website and that’s a perfect example of the type of drop down menus I want for mine. The ones that you have at the top of your website, I want to do something like that and cannot figure that out. Thanks.

    Howdy!

    Please see below:

I believe the issue here is that you’ve created multiple menus (Cambodia, Travel Tips, etc). In fact, we’ll want to create one menu with all of these elements in it. That will help us to display a list of items across the top (shown here) with drop-downs underneath Cambodia, Travel Tips, etc.

Also, I’m assuming Cambodia, Travel Tips, etc are going to be post categories (posts centered around a main topic). Is that correct?

If so, can you try following these steps?

    1. Create new categories for all of the items (Cambodia, Travel Tips, etc) following the steps here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-dashboard

    2. Create a new menu called “Menu” following the instructions here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#creating-a-custom-menu

    3. Add all of your newly created categories following the steps here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages

    4. Setup your menu to display following the steps here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#managing-your-menus

Can you give those a shot?

Also, what is the difference between pages and posts? I’ve noticed I can only add pages to my menus rather than posts.

Pages are supported in menus by default. However, you can also add posts if you would like. You would just need to add them as a custom link if you want to link directly to the post:

    Menus

I believe you want to add categories as explained above though.

The other main difference is that pages are meant to house static (non-changing content). Posts are generally more fluid (updated more frequently). More differences here:

    Pages vs. Posts

    Hello Jeremey,

Thank you so much this has been so helpful and now I’ve got my blog looking a lot more how i’d like it to! I do still have a few questions sorry to bother you again. I now have the categories showing at the top of the page like I wanted and when you click on them it takes you to a page with the posts. I would like the categories to have the different posts shown below them in a drop down menu rather than the posts all being displayed on the same page. Does that make sense? From what you sent me I can’t figure out how to do that.

Also, I would like a home button to be shown at the top of the page next to the categories so that people can click home and go back to my first page that has the about me section.

Can you help with this? I really appreciate it!

Yep! I think I understand what you’re looking for here. I can help you do that, but I just want to let you know that it’s going to be a bit of a manual process. Unfortunately, it won’t be possible to automatically add a post underneath the category drop-down once it’s created. You’ll need to go in and do it by hand.

To accomplish this, follow these steps:

    1. Start on this page:

      https://fareastandbeyond.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php

    2. Click the small arrow next to Thailand to expand the item like this:

      http://d.pr/i/14efV

    3. Click the read “Remove” link at the bottom of the page
    4. On the left-hand side of the screen, expand the section titled “Links” and add a link to your menu with the URL reading “#” and the Link Text reading “Thailand”. Here’s an example:

      http://d.pr/i/10keS

At this point, we’ll now have Thailand in our menu, but it will be something called a “Static Tab” meaning it doesn’t actually go anywhere. It’s just a placeholder.

    5. Find a post that’s supposed to be under the Thailand category and grab the URL. It looks like this might be one of them:

      http://fareastandbeyond.com/2015/02/17/chiang-mai-im-in-love/

    6. Back on the menu page where we started, go back to add another link to your menu. This time, insert the post URL under the URL field and the title of the post under Link Text like this:

      http://d.pr/i/1j7O8

    7. Drag and drop the post menu item until it’s a sub-item under our newly-created Thailand page like this:

      http://d.pr/i/Ab1Z

Can you give those steps a try one time just to make sure it creates the look we’re going for?

Also, I would like a home button to be shown at the top of the page next to the categories so that people can click home and go back to my first page that has the about me section.

To do this, follow the steps above to create the link in the menu. Under Link Text, put “Home.” Under the URL, put http://fareastandbeyond.com.

Thanks so much Jeremey, that is exactly what I was looking for. You have been a huge help. Thank you for breaking it down step by step for a newbie like me haha. Have a great day!
