Drop down menus on touchscreens no longer working?

  • Unknown's avatar

My drop down menus used to work on touchscreens but now they don’t, though they still work fine using a mouse on desktop/laptop. More precisely, the sub-menu items no longer work – i.e. when you touch the top item from the main menu bar, the sub-items appear but touching (selecting) one has no effect. I’ve not made any recent changes to the website. Has something changed behind the scenes?

My blog is thinkingaboutsuicide.com using customized Able theme.

    Thanks – David

    Hi there!

Can you give me more information on what touchscreen devices (iPad, Surface, smartphone) you’re using where the menus aren’t working? Once I have that information, I’ll be better able to help.

    Thank you!

Hi and thanks for your reply.

The problem occurs on my Nexus 7 tablet. I’ve also tested it on two Android Smartphones where it’s not a problem because the menu bar (under my header image) is replaced by a separate menu system above the header, along with the search function from the right sidebar. When you touch on this “Menu” option my sub-menu structure opens up and works OK.

With the extra screen space on the Nexus 7 the menu bar appears under the header image as designed by me. Each of these menu items have a drop down sub-menu, which appear when their menu bar item is touched. OK so far. Except touching a sub-menu item doesn’t work.

More precisely… when using a mouse, hovering over a menu bar item opens the sub-menu, but clicking on it takes you to an “About…” page for that section of my site. With touch, a long-press opens the sub-menu (like hover with mouse), and short-press takes you to the “About…” (same as click with mouse). So to be very clear, touching any sub-menu item takes you to the “About…” page – i.e. as if the menu bar item had been touched (clicked).

Sorry for the long message. Hope it helps and you can help me fix this.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for your detailed information!

It appears that our current mobile theme isn’t being triggered by the screen size of the Nexus 7. Since this applies to the mobile theme in general, our team has noted this behavior and will add this fix to a future update to the mobile theme.

    Thanks for your help!

Ouch! OK, thanks. When you say “our current mobile theme” is that some background behind-the-scene thing? I ask because I chose the Able theme (after testing many others) mainly because it was supposed to be “responsive” to variable screen sizes like we find with mobile devices. And I presume from your answer there’s nothing I can do but wait until it’s fixed. I hope this is given priority because I’m sure my website is not the only that is now crippled and useless on large touch screens.

Many thanks for your prompt replies and for clarifying what the problem is.

You currently have the mobile theme enabled on your site, which overrides the responsive theme:

The size of the Nexus 7 should trigger the mobile theme, but for some reason it isn’t, which affects more than just the specific theme.

I’ve tested your site on the iPad – which has by far a larger market share than the Nexus 7 – and the menus work properly. Hopefully that will ease your mind at least a little bit while we work on this fix. :)

    I hope that helps!
