Drop-down notifications in admin bar

  • Unknown's avatar

This morning my drop-down notifications (speech bubble, right side of admin bar) were full of stuff I’ve never seen before and don’t want.

    Example:
Your stats are booming! Looks like “Pied Type” is getting lot of traffic.

    Clicking on that shows:
    A spike in your stats
Your blog, Pied Type, appears to be getting more traffic than usual!
    107 hourly views
    7 hourly views on average

There were 9 of these, with the stats varying a bit on each one. And there was a notification of a new follower. I don’t want to see this stuff with my comment notifications and it’s never appeared in the drop-down before. I’ve not changed any settings. How do I get rid of this and ensure it doesn’t reappear?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t have that happening on mine (thank goodness). I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks. Also, they don’t go away after I’ve read them, and the speech bubble stays orange, indicating new notifications even though there aren’t any.

Eeeeuw! that’s no good. I’ll stop posting to the timestamp doesn’t keep moving forward.

  • Unknown's avatar

Correction. The bubble doesn’t stay orange, but the entries on the list aren’t going away. That may just be because there aren’t any newer ones yet.

    Hi there,

The “Your stats are booming!” notification pops up when we notice unusually high traffic on your blog. That often indicates that one of your posts is especially popular. As with other notifications, it will stay in the notifications list until newer notifications come in.

That notification shouldn’t pop up a bunch of times on the same day, so I investigated the stats on your blog. It turns out that these notifications came in on different days: April 10, March 31, February 22, February 3, etc. (You can click on “hourly views” in the notification to see what day the spike in view corresponds to.) It was just chance that they appeared next to each other in your notifications list.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

No, they were dated differently but they all came in on the same day. (If you can see them, notice there were no other notifications between them.) I check my stats closely, often several times a day. I do not need or want attaboy notifications about my stats. If this is some new feature, please provide a way to turn it off. Follower stats are meaningless because they are full of spammers. My total number of Likes is meaningless because the count just started this week and I already have more than 2,000 posts published, along with their accompanying Likes.

And while we’re discussing notifications, today I suddenly started getting notifications of my own comments — in both my email and the drop-down notifications list.

Please just make all the extraneous, unwanted, duplicative notifications stop.

Count me in on that too please.

I passed along your feedback about notifications to our team. They’ll take that into consideration as they continue working on that feature. Thanks!

And while we’re discussing notifications, today I suddenly started getting notifications of my own comments — in both my email and the drop-down notifications list.

Since you have two accounts (with the usernames piedtype and windwhistle), you may see notifications about your comments if they were made from the other account you own. For example, while signed in as piedtype you’ll see notifications of comments made from your account windwhistle.

  • Unknown's avatar

The only comments I see are from PiedType, the only name I use for comments. windwhistle, my primary account’s username, appears in this forum, and only in this forum, even though I’ve specified PiedType as my display name. Yes, it’s confusing, but your system won’t allow me to convert the original username windwhistle to PiedType (“that name is already taken”), even though both accounts are mine. I’d like nothing better than to combine the accounts under the name PiedType so that windwhistle doesn’t keep showing up here.

    Hi there,

The reason you see the name PiedType on all of the comments is that both of your usernames (piedtype and windwhistle) have that set as the display name in their account settings. However, you’ll still see the username in the forums here, since these support forums don’t use display names.

There isn’t a way to merge those two WordPress.com accounts, but if you’d like to have all of your blogs linked to the username piedtype you can do that.

While logged in to your windwhistle account, you can transfer ownership of your blogs to the username piedtype. We have a guide for doing that here:

Moving a Blog: Transferring Your Blog to Another WordPress.com User or Account

Once the blogs are all linked to that username, you can stop using the username windwhistle. Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thanks, but you can understand how silly it would be to export a blog with more than 2,000 posts to a different account just to change the username.

    Returning to my original point:

Please just make all the extraneous, unwanted, duplicative notifications stop.

You actually don’t need to export the blogs to transfer them to another user. There are instructions on that page for exporting blogs, but the section specific to this case is “Transferring Your Blog to Another WordPress.com User or Account.” You can do that without dealing with exporting/importing anything, if you’d like. Of course, that’s entirely up to you. :)

Please just make all the extraneous, unwanted, duplicative notifications stop.

I have passed your feedback about those notifications on to our developers, so they’ll consider that as they work on future updates to notifications.
