Drop in views of Home page/Archives

Over the past couple of months, the number of visits to my Home page/Archives has dropped significantly. In the past, that category was almost always at the top of the list. Now, the top post is always a particular post from February, 2013. That post had normal traffic until October, when it suddenly started getting a lot of traffic. Overall, my site stats are up, possibly because of this particular post. Should I assume that this is spam or just something caused by the now-hidden Google search terms? Thanks for any insights!

This is almost certainly because of a change in search terms, but your dashboard will tell you that. What does it say on your stats page under Search Terms? How many clicks?

Thanks! Total search terms = 136, with 121 of those being unknown. The number of unknown search terms matches the number of visits to the suddenly popular post. Should that tell me something?

It’s too obscure, but you have a viral post. You’d be foolish not to take advantage of this. Make a post on a related subject and edit the previous viral post to note “UPDATE: new post on related subject” or something and link to the new one. I generally manage to turn a viral post to my long-term advantage this way and keep ten percent of that traffic.

Thanks for taking the time to answer what appears to have been a foolish question! I’m glad that you think this post may be being seen by actual people. And thanks for the advice on taking advantage of this interest.

You’re welcome. To my mind, viral traffic is the BEST kind, because it brings so many people from a wide varieties of backgrounds. Your blog gets seen by many more people who can contribute diversity to your community online.
