Dropdown menu with latest posts by category
-
Hello everybody.
I’d like to know how to get a menu which would have a button for each of my categories and when the mouse is over one button, that would display a preview of the latest posts of the related category.
An example can be found at : http://www.lebarboteur.com
The “Dressing” “Editorial” … “Guide shopping” menu is precisely the kind of thing I’d like my menu to seem like.Unfortunately I’m new to the wordpress’ way of working (I’m more used to the “classic” code writing kind of websites, with which I could do the stuff I want).
Anyone have a tip ?
Thanks -
You are pointing to a blog that’s not hosted by WordPress.COM and a theme that cannot be used on a WordPress.COM blog.
Technically you can’t post to more than one page on any blog but do read on. Static Pages and dynamic Category Pages are not the same. The former cannot automatically update but the latter do.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/If you want to have pages that do update then they must be dynamic category pages that will automatically update every time you publish a post assigned to the relevant category.
By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

Oh RATS! I do apologize. This is a CSS Forum thread and I just noticed that. Sorry. Please be patient while waiting for another Volunteer or Staff to help you.

This goes beyond what CSS alone can do! The CSS editor at WordPress.com can be used to style content that already exists on the page, i.e. the preview of the latest posts of the related category would need to exist in the underlying menu and menus at WordPress.com are not setup that way. So, what you are asking is not a CSS question but instead a custom code question.
There are some important differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com setups. With WordPress.org, you get access to modify code but you also need to set up a hosting account and be in charge of maintaining the WordPress open source software on that hosting account. With WordPress.com, there is an option to add CSS but you cannot change the underlying HTML structure of a page (which you would need to do in order to make the change you described above). To learn more about the differences in WordPress.org and WordPress.com, take a look at http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you’d like to consider switching, there is a guide at http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

There is an alternative you could try. I’ve set up a text widget using the display post shortcode on my site. Hover your mouse over the title Category Examples and watch the posts appear. You could potentially customise the appearance to make it look more appealing, and make sure your posts have featured images.
You could even reposition them on the page to mimic a menu, but this gets increasingly complicated if you have a responsive theme that looks good on tablets and mobiles too.
