Dropdown Menus

I’d like to create drop-down menus to appear on the top (header) menu of our site. Ideally, I’d like to create a drop-down menu for the main segments (or categories) that we’re currently using, another for the grandfathered categories we no longer use, one for site news and an archive menu for old blog posts (we’re going into video production early next year). I’ve read and viewed tutorials on how to create drop-down menus without using code, but I seem to be missing a step; the menu items don’t show up on our main page. If it helps, we’re currently using the Shaan theme, though we may be changing it once we begin uploading videos.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If the above is not possible, then perhaps I could just move the Categories Widget bar to the Header menu and set it up as a dropdown menu? Or is that not possible either?
