duplicate image files in media library

  I exported one WP.com blog and imported it into another, newly created one. The move went fine.
  But when I looked in my media library, I noticed that all the image files that existed at the time of the move are now duplicated. New ones, uploaded since the import appear as singletons.
  Am I right in thinking that I can harmlessly delete the duplicates? And is the appearance of the doubles something to do with the move?

  Did you import your site a while ago? We fixed a problem with duplicated image some time ago, but if you upgraded before then we may need to check your site.

  Thanks for replying – I marked the post ‘resolved’ because I thought it had failed to attract attention, but it isn’t really …
  Maybe I’m being dumb but I went to the link you suggested and couldn’t see any way to contact you from there :(

  Anyway, I did the import about one week ago.
