Duplicate URL

Hello! I purchased the url TIME2SHINE.FIT with premium features but noticed plugins and other features were unavailable to use. I believe I caused this issue after previously trying to change my existing page’s url to the same address. When I look at my list of pages it shows two with time2shine.fit for both. Is there a way to delete the old page? I’ve followed a tutorial but didn’t have any luck.

    Thank you!
    Jon

  • Hi Jon! I see you’ve got an upgraded site here and the beginnings of your own Jetpack-connected installation. If you don’t want to host here, you can cancel the hosting. I’d recommend not cancelling the domain, though, and pointing to our new host until you can transfer it. Cancelling domains is a bit of rigamarole if you intend to keep the name.

On the other hand, we actually do allow plugins here if your plan supports it. Our services include SSL hosting, backups, spam protection, maintenance, security, and support, or you can self-host your copy of WordPress and handle those things or hire out services as needed, but ours is a great value when you look at it that way. This article has more info. Let us know how we can help.

Thanks so much for the reply! I’m attaching some screenshots in case it helps. You’ll see two sites.. the free time2shinefit.wordpress.com & time2shine.fit. When I try to add plugins I’ll run into one of two issues. If it’s on the free version it says I need to update. If I try to add the plugin on time2shine.fit, I receive a message stating that an error occurred. Before I purchased the domain yesterday, I thought I could just change the URL of my existing page (previously time2shineky.com) to time2shine.fit. I believe I changed this through Bluehost. When I did that I started receiving error messages on Jetpack, Bluehost and WordPress. Now that I purchased that domain, the system thinks that page is already set to my default because of the change I made to my URL a month ago. I think that is what the issue is but I’m not sure how to correct it.

    Thanks again for your help!

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

Before I purchased the domain yesterday, I thought I could just change the URL of my existing page (previously time2shineky.com) to time2shine.fit. I believe I changed this through Bluehost.

Ok, this is probably the cause of the woes you’re facing – to check, did Bluehost help you with this change?

You’d ideally want to check with them to make sure the domain and installation is as it should be.

Traditionally, on WordPress.com – changes like this is something we can help with, if the site is hosted on WordPress.com, but our support is limited.

Once that’s done, you’d want to disconnect and reconnect Jetpack:

time2shinefit.wordpress.com is completely separate to time2shine.fit, as the two sites are with two hosts.

I hope this helps with clearing things up.

Thanks so much for your help! I have another quick question. So the time2shineky.com was updated and I was able to delete/disconnect it from my account. I noticed on that site I was able to add plug-ins and other features, but my current site, time2shine.fit, does not allow for this. Any thoughts as to why there’s a difference?

  • Hi there,

time2shineky.com uses the free open-source version of the WordPress software.

The self-hosted version of WordPress (which is used to set up sites on traditional web hosts like GoDaddy, Bluehost, etc.) is more advanced and completely DIY, but would also allow you to add 3rd party plugins or themes.

Please note that this version of WordPress is usually the choice of web designers and developers, as well as advanced users. Also WordPress it just one of the many platforms that traditional hosts will let you install on your account, your hosting itself usually needs to be manually optimized to work with WordPress, and your host does not typically offer WordPress support in-house. For site-related questions, you may need to turn to Google or the open-source forums for example.

However, it is the totally advanced and unlocked version of WordPress and as you’ve noted you can install plugins and themes, access the source code directly, etc.

but my current site, time2shine.fit, does not allow for this. Any thoughts as to why there’s a difference?

As mentioned previously, WordPress.com is a fully managed service where we take care of server optimizations, security, brute force login protection, automatic software updates, etc.

I see you upgraded to the Premium plan recently, but to be able to add plugins or 3rd party themes you will need to upgrade to our Business Plan. This moves your site to our business-grade hosting where you have SFTP and database access, incremental and user-accessible backups, and 24/7 live chat support. Essentially you would have the best of both worlds, with a fully managed site that is also totally unlocked and as customizable as you wish. More info here:

Worth noting that if you were to switch from Premium to Business you would not pay the price above, but would instead pay a discounted cost that is equal to the cost difference between the two plans. Hope this helps!
