Duplicated images in media library
-
I used Open Live Writer as my blog editor some time ago. It worked fine, but there was an issue with the images that were being saved. When a post was saved as a draft, the images used were duplicated in the media library.
I would like to delete the duplicated images to save space. They don’t use much space but it’s pointless for them to be there if not needed or used. My problem is, how do I identify which image is being used in the post when I have a choice of three or four? There doesn’t seem to be a timestamp on any of the images in the library.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there, for the site you shared, normally we’ll take care of resizing images for you, automatically. If you imported it with duplicates, I’m afraid there’s not a great way to handle this in bulk. But here’s what I would do:
- Look at your media library and click on one of the images that is duplicated
- You’ll get a direct link to the media file. Copy that.
- In another tab, use the search box on the Posts page to search for that file. Repeat that for each of the duplicated images, and you should find which one to keep.
- If you don’t see _any_ posts with that image, please consider whether it’s a featured image. If it is, you probably won’t have duplicates, but you should probably keep the file.
You may also start to notice patterns as you do this. For example, if all of the duplicates have the word “thumb.jpg” in them, you could search your media library for that to narrow down potential duplicates. Just be sure to check the posts too, just in case.
I hope this helps!

I have tried what you suggested and have found that some of the duplicated images did not have a link to post. However, many of the duplicates will open the same post. I am in the process of deleting the images that have no link but not the ones that do have a link. A strange one I think.
