Duplicated pages and posts

  • Unknown's avatar

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that WP had inexplicably duplicated many of my posts and one of my PAGES (CHANGES conversations between authors).

I deleted the extra (newer) PAGE and some of the duped posts, but there are dozens of them. Why did this happen and can you fix it from your end? The newest ones aren’t necessarily the ones that are WRONG, either; it’s all mixed up.

Also, possibly related, when I go to PREVIEW a post, the list of my PAGES (the MENU at the top) now includes just one regular POST in its MENU list (“Part I….”). But, when I go to my site itself, that is not showing.

Another problem with PREVIEW: the view I get is not the same on my desktop as it is when I copy the entire page and paste it into an email to show someone (some of the formatting positions shift in the WRAP function around an image, e.g.). WHY? Which is the version that will post when it goes LIVE?

What is going on with WP?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Does every post you create get duplicated? Do the duplicated posts get published, or just scheduled?

I see some duplicates in your account, one that has a standard title, and one that includes HTML tags (usually < strong >) in the title.

Do you know which one is the original post?

Can you tell me anything else about what changed three weeks ago? Did you sign up for any services (like hootsuite or ifttt)?

Anything you can tell me about how your process may have changed when things started going wonky, will help me figure out what’s going on so we can stop it.

The thing I did 3 weeks ago or thereabouts was try to download all of my Posts according to the directions on how to do that. Soon after that, a visitor noticed my CHANGES page was not updated and it turned out there were two versions of that page. I then noticed the scattering of duplicate POSTS which are all still there.

Usually, I add HTML to a title near the end of my editing process, so any POST with a HTML title (vs. a non-HTML title) is probably the newer version.

HOWEVER, some comments are showing up on OLDER versions only…..?????

    HELP!

Just to be sure–you exported the files, but you didn’t also import them did you? That could cause duplicate posts.

One more question: When you create your posts, do you use the newer editor (the one with a blue background) or the editor that’s part of the WP admin screen (the one with a grey background a a black bar down the left side)

HOWEVER, some comments are showing up on OLDER versions only…..?????

I am seeing duplicate posts in your account, but only in your scheduled posts. I don’t see anything that’s published and a duplicate. Could you send me links to one of the posts that published twice?

Thanks. I did not import after exporting. If I had, wouldn’t they all be duplicated?

I use the old editor to create posts; never switched. Don’t usually like WP updates and don’t use them until forced to (and all the bugs are out).

Actually, no. If you had imported a couple of days or a week after exporting, the only new posts you would see would be original copies of posts you had made changes to since the export.

Based on what we can see from the backend, that seems to be what happened.

The good news is, you can safely delete the copies of the posts you don’t want and as you create new posts you won’t find new duplicates popping up.

If anything changes and you get new duplicates, be sure to let me know.

I don’t really understand what happened, but I have dozens of duplicate posts and had some duplicated pages as well (which I got rid of).

Are my readers seeing duplicate posts if I don’t manually get rid of the extra ones, or are they only duplicated on my list of posts?

I ask because it is very time-consuming to remove all these extra posts and if no one is seeing them, why should I do it?

I know they saw the extra PAGES, so I’m concerned.

    Thanks.

I only see duplicates among your scheduled posts so right now there aren’t any published duplicates.

The duplicates and the originals are both scheduled to be published on future dates, so you will want to remove the extras.

The good news is there is an easy way to do this. Start on your list of posts:

    https://sallyember.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?paged=1

Check the box next to the ones you want to delete. Then at the top of the page where it says “bulk actions” choose “Move to Trash” Then click Apply.

That will remove all the duplicates at one time.
