Duplicating the live site to create a beta test site

    I have recently taken over running the website of a charity I work for & I have run into a number of issues with just getting the site to install PHP or WordPress updates without bringing the site down (it was still running PHP 5).

    My idea is to duplicate the site & then update the duplicate & if it does not kill it apply the update to the live site. However, I have to keep the two sites on the same host & this is where I am stuck.

    I created a folder called beta within the live WordPress install & copied the live site files across. When I logged into that install I went to change the WordPress URL & site address URL to start in the beta folder but when I go to save I get an Internal Server error message & am directed to the site admin, which is me.

    Is it feasible to create a test site on the same server as a live site & if yes, how do I do it?
