Duster — Featured Image

    I’m trying to use featured images on the duster theme and wordpress says I should have a choice between having a small or large image. To have a large image it says —
    To have a big featured image you need to use an image that is at least as big as the header image (1000px x 300px). Also, make sure you have a set size for Large image under Settings -> Media that allows for such sizes.
    I want a small image but for some reason even when I change these settings it doesn’t work.
    Can anybody help? How do I get a small featured image?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I’m able to get a smaller pic on there, but I am not sure of the maximum size of picture it allows. 1000 x 300 is for the shallow image like the one it automatically adds if you choose this theme. However, I have used deeper pictures and they seem to work. If I use a smaller picture it seems to go too far to the right, moving outside the width of the blog page.
    In your case have you created a new page to use as the front page and then ticked the template option for showcase? Then you need to mark the post you have the picture on as sticky – it’s a box in the Visibility option box.
    Good luck

    A 1000×300 image set as a featured image to a post or a static page replaces the regular header image when viewing that post or page.
    A smaller image set as a featured image to a sticky post shows up to the right of the “Featured Post” excerpt when you use the special “Showcase” template of the theme.

    I’m using smaller images (about 300×300) and setting them as feature images for my posts. It shows up to the right of the post just fine. The problem is on the actual post. For some reason wordpress is stretching my small images and making them HUGE header images. How do I stop that?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @trla – exactly my problem today – > hence I’m searching for a solution thru the forum. The image that shows on the Showcase is ok, but it becomes displayed on the post itself as only part of the image and much enlarged and distorted.

    @trla & omowizard: What else would you expect? A header image must occupy all the available width. Since featured images serve a dual purpose in Duster, you must take that into account: if you don’t want stretched or extremely high images in the header, make sure the images you set as featured images are 1000×300.

  • Unknown's avatar

    WordPress says that you can pick between a big feature and small feature on this theme. Even if the header image must occupy the entire width, I would expect wordpress to make it 1000×300 and cut it off the way it does in other themes. but it doesn’t, it makes the image 1000×1000.
    Also I’ve tried making featured images 1000×300 to see if that helped but it doesn’t. while the header on the post itself looks fine, the featured image on the homepage ends up all contorted.
    Wordpress says:
    To have a big featured image you need to use an image that is at least as big as the header image (1000px x 300px). Also, make sure you have a set size for Large image under Settings -> Media that allows for such sizes.
    I don’t have these settings nor am I using a big header image.Is there another setting I need to tinker with?

    Of course it doesn’t turn any image to 1000×1000, it turns any square image to 1000×1000.

    The header image needs to be displayed at a width of 1000px. There are three possibilities: 1) Force the complete original to 1000×300; should be out of the question, as it would distort any image that isn’t in a 10/3 ratio. 2) Display 1000×300, with the rest of the image cut-off if not in a 10/3 ratio. 3) Leave the height free, so that you get a complete and undistorted image no matter what its ratio. You seem to prefer 2, although in the case of a square image you’d only get to see one third of it (and even less in the case of portrait-shaped images). But the designers of Duster have opted for 3, and there’s nothing you can do about it (except making a suggestion to staff in case they might wish to change their decision).

    Now, since the header image needs to be displayed at a width of 1000px (regardless of whether the theme works with option 2 or option 3), if your images are 300px wide they’ll be pixellated or otherwise degraded. If you want good quality for the header, you must upload 1000px wide images.

    You’re saying that 1000×300 images don’t seem to work for the featured post. Not my experience. If the width for the Large option in Settings>Media is set to anything below 1000, the featured image will show up to the right of the featured post title (scaled down if the original is larger than the allowed space). If the width for the Large option is set to 1000 and the image is 1000px wide, it will show up as a full width image. And that’s what WP means: two different display options for the featured post image, not different options re the size of the originals you upload.

    As I already said, in my opinion you must take into account how a theme works and adapt to it; if you don’t like how it works, use another theme – or buy the CSS upgrade to modify it.

    @panaghiotisadam Having a feature image on the Showcase was a major reason I spent hours setting this great new theme works, but now I’ve discovered a significant drawback.

    What would I expect? I would expect that a feature image on Showcase is also reflected prominently on the post, but NOT that it would become the header image and change my branding for the whole blog. That is a major disadvantage to me, enough to make me consider reverting to another theme.

    So it is more a question of what I wouldn’t expect… it is not logical to me that assigning a feature image to display on Showcase would automatically become the header image for the post. I would expect the option for choice of header and a Showcase feature image to be separated. I don’t want my header image changed and I want a great image on Showcase.

    How to do that?

    You have just expressed exactly why I am not using this theme. Please see here for some good news in the form of a workaround:

    When you view a static page in Duster, the default header image is replaced by whatever image you set as a featured image to that page.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#setting-a-featured-image

    So you can get rid of the default image if you create a 24px high by 1000px long white image and set it as the featured image in your other pages.

    @TT: That doesn’t address omowizard’s problem.

    @omowizard:

    “I would expect that a feature image on Showcase is also reflected prominently on the post, but NOT that it would become the header image”.

    Well, the designer’s idea was that the featured image is reflected prominently on the post BY becoming a header image. As I said to tria, when you use a theme you must take into account how the theme works. If you want your featured post to display an image that will not become a header image as well, then don’t set a featured image: insert a regular image, then switch the editor to HTML, copy the image code and paste it into the Excerpt module of the editor. Can be any size and ratio (up to 1000px wide).

    @Panos
    Okay. DUH I do get it this time. Thanks. :).

    I really like the general style of Duster, and am using, but I really do NOT like that a feature image shows up as header on teh post. I’m at a loss why the designers decided to do this – I can’t think of any type of site where this could be seen as a benefit.

    I have used the workaround described, but would DEARLY love it if the Duster people could provide a way to have a feature image on a post that shows up on the showcase page only. (and doesn’t show up as a header on the post). It could also show up on the post, but UNDER the menu bar, not as a header, and be able to be resized so that it can look its best.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Now I understand and see the benefit of having a Showcase page. It actually works out better for me because it gives the look of a web page rather than just a blog. But it has been a long road to understanding this and I’ve been knocking my head against my desk in an effort to get my page to do the impossible. And I thought it would be easier to figure out how to run a WordPress blog than learn HTML to run my website! Silly me. Thumbs down to the instructions for this theme.

    Are the developers of Duster monitoring this discussion or do I need to request this chane elsewhere?

    I’m having the exact same problem that you’re having omowizard. I don’t want my header image to change. It is rare for headers to change from one page to the next on any website (for the simple reason that it is distracting and disturbs any sort of continuity when it does change). Isn’t there any way around this?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @nosemusic: You’re not using the showcase template, so you don’t need featured images. If you do wish to use the template, the way around this is mentioned in my last reply above.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @panaghiotisadam

    I removed the showcase page for now, until I figure out how to fix this.

    “If you want your featured post to display an image that will not become a header image as well, then don’t set a featured image: insert a regular image, then switch the editor to HTML, copy the image code and paste it into the Excerpt module of the editor. Can be any size and ratio (up to 1000px wide). “

    Can you explain this a little bit further? So in the the blog post I insert an image, then switch to HTML and copy the image code? What is the Excerpt module of the editor? Is this still within the blog post HTML view or is this somewhere else?

    I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about code and I’m new to wordpress. However, I’m pretty good at following directions (I had no problem setting up the showcase page, aside from the header changing). Can you please just make the directions a bit more clear for a novice?

    Thanks so much.

    Your post screen includes several modules apart from the main editor: the Publish module, the Categories module, etc. One of them is the Excerpt module. If you’re not seeing it, click Screen Options (top right) to enable it.

    The Excerpt module is a text and HTML input field. Whatever you put there will show up as a custom excerpt instead of what the theme would normally display. So, yes, you insert an image into the post, switch to HTML, copy or cut the image code, paste it into the Excerpt field, add text if you wish, click Update. (I wouldn’t do it that way, but that’s the easy way when you don’t know HTML.)
