Duster theme header on only one page

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, I’m wondering if there is a way in the Duster theme to have the header image only on the homepage and not on the inside pages. I’d love it if the inside pages did not have such a large area at the top of the page taken up by the header. Thanks!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Oh, forgot – also was wondering if there was a way to turn off the search feature. Thanks!

    Hello there,
    The only way the two things you are requesting can be done is by purchasing the annually renewable CSS editing upgrade and doing the work yourself. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

    Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and only 2 Volunteer provide help with CSS, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

    If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

    If you do purchase the upgrade be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/

    Ahh – that’s kind of what I would have guessed. Thanks for your reply!

    You’re welcome. :)

    When you view a static page in Duster, the default header image is replaced by whatever image you set as a featured image to that page.

    Featured Images

    So you can get rid of the default image if you create a 24px high by 1000px long white image and set it as the featured image in your other pages.

    Hi there. Thanks for posting this workaround. :) I played with this theme too. Yes that will do the trick, but it will also result in a 1000 x 300 pixel white space. That may be okay for some bloggers so it’s good to know.

    @TT: My original thought was an 1×1 image, of course, but I found that below a certain minimum height you get the problem you describe. An image in the dimensions I suggest worked fine.

    @Panos
    I’m back and I find the height of 24 pixels to be tolerable. Thanks for sharing because the 300 pixel height was too much white space for me. :)

    Hey, this is perfect! Check the site i’m working on to see it: http://trianglehomeworks.wordpress.com

    One issue though (btw this is the first time i’ve used wordpress, so I’m totally a nube) is that the header still shows up on the page that lists my posts. I have that set as the “news” page. Any ideas on how to get the header off that page. I imagine there is some setting somewhere…

    If there was such a setting, you wouldn’t have to resort to the workaround I suggested.

    You can’t remove the header from your “News” page, because it’s no longer a static page: when you set a page as your posts page, you no longer see the original page, you just borrow its title, so to speak, to create a top nav link to your latest posts (that is, what your homepage would display if you hadn’t set a static front).

    What you could do is go to Appearance>Header and remove the header image altogether, then insert it as a regular image at the beginning of the page you’ve set as your front (with some extra HTML coding to position it correctly). But this will give you the black nav bar above instead of below the image.

    Ahhh that makes sense. Thanks for the info. Thinking about it now, I don’t really need posts. I can just add news items as they come up on the static page. So now I just don’t have posts at all and that works. Thanks a bunch for all your help!

    @trianglehomeworks
    Your site looks wonderful – no kidding I’m tempted to give Duster another go now.

    @Panos
    Thanks again for helping out.
