Dynamic Photo Pages

  • Unknown's avatar

Here’s the URL to my blog post about what I want to do: http://smyte.wordpress.com/2010/04/12/wordpress-com-photo-blog-page/

Basically, I want to add another dynamic page for just pictures, and a description per picture per date set up like a photography blog. So instead of having 10 or so pictures in one page, I want to add a date, comments option, and description per post similarly to a regular dynamic page of a WordPress blog. Similar to what Tumblr does, or can do.

Why not just use WordPress.com instead of using another blog service for something so similar to what WordPress can probably do? I’m just not one hundred percent it can be done, and if it can be done — I’m not sure how it can be done. If you know, and want to share, let me know!

    Thanks for reading.

You can have only one dynamic page per blog.
    But this might satisfy you:
You could have two blogs disguised as one, using a header tab link to connect them to each other. This trick works in Tarski:

    Page tabs as extra links

Also: When using the gallery shortcode, I don’t see a gallery option when I use Picture URL specification when adding pictures to my blog.

I’ll add the shortcode which allows me to see the box to add a picture by URL. When I try to add the picture to the gallery, a hotlink is then added to the page. I don’t really get why it would do that. Is this theme specific? It shouldn’t be.

When I add pictures to the page, it will allow me to add them proper with a border and description under the picture. I love that, but it’s the size I don’t. I can probably add dimensions which could do. But it’s not what I want since I’m trying to figure out the Gallery Shortcode. I’m looking at the documentation via: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#gallery-shortcode

Another thing I would suggest: Allow the Picture URL specification to work with the gallery shortcode if the shortcode is enabled on the page. So, if pictures are in fact added to the page, the gallery shortcode picks it up, and it’s added to the gallery while each individual picture is then hidden other than what is in the gallery.

What I envision is either having three pictures per page in 1 column and being able to use a link for another three images in the same gallery. (Only allowing to display 3 ascending pictures.)

In my honest (or humble) opinion, if that is not done yet, it would allow for great, easy integration with the WordPress.com blog editor for the user.

The gallery shortcode adds all pictures attached to a post to the gallery display.

Adding an image by way of url won’t attach that picture to the post, so it won’t be displayed in the gallery.

If you want a gallery with 3 pictures and a gallery with another 3 pictures (assuming all images are attached to the post), then you’ll have to use exclude=ID (ID being the identifying number of the pictures you want to exclude).

By the way, this is a peer-support forum. We volunteer to help and are only your fellow bloggers and have no authority over what wp.com does or how it works.

There is a forum called “Ideas” that staff reads, so that would be the place for suggestions.

Thanks for the replies. I know it’s a community forum. I’m sure the staff read this too. I’ve since sent the staff a message about what I’m inquiring about, along with this forum URL. :D

How do I get a gallery display? Is this the little box-thing that gets implemented when writing the shortcode?

You’ve summed it up I guess. “Adding an image by way of url won’t attach that picture to the post, so it won’t be displayed in the gallery.” Personally, I think it should be allowed. But, for I, not paying for any WordPress extenuates won’t be success without a space increase. What is it, 3gb of data freely available? Quite enough for now, but I guess I’ll have to be a lot more choice with what I want to display. Does the media limit the amount of text on the blog too?

The people who do read, and write in these forums could also code for WordPress so by delimiting means, it may not be. I’m all for conceptual projections.

    Thanks again!

If you write the shortcode in the square brackets, do it in the html editor.

Otherwise, choose add media —> gallery —> insert gallery Doing it this way allows you to adjust some of the settings.

3 GB is thousands of pictures! Have mercy on dial-up readers and size/compress your images to 100 kb! 3 GB is only for picture storage. Text is on wordpress! and it is 3 GB per blog.

    Happy to help!
