e-commerce

is it possible to add e-commerce to my site? I have read that you can add a plugin at wordpress.org if you have your own domain name, is this correct and if so how do I go about doing this?

That’s right, you can have e-commerce on a self-hosted WordPress site. You can’t have it here on WordPress.com, though.
Please see this link to learn about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

Sorry, embarrassing typo on my end! You can’t have e-commerce here on WordPress.com.
This link will give you instructions for using a Paypal button on your blog, in case you wish to sell your own work on your blog (no reselling of work created or services provided by other people is allowed): http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
If you require e-commerce/shopping cart functionality beyond this, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on e-commerce if you set up a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. Please see this link to learn about the differences: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested: http://get.wp.com/hosting/
Again, my apologies for the typo in my first reply.
