E-commerce- plug in vs link to other platform
-
Hi There,
I am launching an ecommerce site for our business and I am trying to decide between using a wordpress plug in (like Gumroad or WooCommerce- I am open to suggestions), or linking to a Shopify webpage.
We will be selling both physical products, and a few digital products, so I need a platform that is secure, has easy payment options, and integrates well to our website.
Currently, we see pretty good traffic on our website, so I am concerned that creating a separate site and linking to it will loose potential traffic from the website.
I am also concerned that adding a plug in to our current site will make it feel more cluttered and slow the site down. Especially because I do not have the developer background to really work around this.
Any thoughts?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @freedomvans — I apologize but you are using the wrong forum center. You need to know the difference between WordPress.com, and WordPress.org, because they aren’t the same forums. Each have different but some same features. If you still don’t understand, read on.
You are on WordPress.com Forums, when you would need to be on WordPress.org forums, for this request, as this is for hosted sites, and not for “self” hosted sites under their own hosts.
Basically, they have they have the same name, but the difference is .org, and .com, and have different options in each. Also, WordPress.com, is where everything is done for you, and WordPress.org, where you are able to manage your servers, etc.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums.
I have some links that may be useful:
— WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
— WordPress.org Forums
— WordPress.org Support Site
We’re so sorry we couldn’t assist you further, and wish you success on your site. -

Hi there,
This is really up to you. On a platform like Shopify a lot will be taken care of for you by the platform, while using a plugin on a WordPress site means you might need to get your hands dirty with the more technical stuff at one point.
On the other hand, with a WordPress plugin you have a lot more freedom in terms of customizing stuff to work and look the way you want them to than you’d have on a platform.
I am also concerned that adding a plug in to our current site will make it feel more cluttered and slow the site down
I can’t speak for other plugins, but WooCommerce is thoroughly tested exactly to ensure this is not the case. And if you use it along with Jetpack a lot of the processing is actually done on our servers here at WordPress.com, not on your site itself.
If you don’t want to worry too much about the technical aspects and this is for a new site, consider creating your site on WordPress.com where you can use WooCommerce on our Business Plan. Then we take care of all the server configuration and maintenance, and you get access to 24/5 live chat support and 24/7priority email support for both the WordPress software and the WooCommerce plugin.
This way you get the flexibility of WordPress along with the support of a managed platform. The best of both worlds, if you ask me :)
We can also guide you in migrating an existing site to WordPress.com if you want.
Let me know if you have any questions.

@alissonwp
This question was not regarding a specific site, but for advice in setting up an eCommerce site, something that is possible on WordPress.com.
If you’re unsure how to answer a question like that, please rather leave it for someone who can. But in this case sending someone to the WordPress.org forums is not helpful, as that forums is to help with the WordPress software or with specific WordPress plugins and themes, and the OP’s question is not about those topics.
