E-mail notification from comments

    I know it’s possible to get email notifications when someone comments on your blog.

    BUT is it possible to set it up so that EVERYONE (i.e. users who comment on my blog) gets an email notification when someone else comments on a post they commented on? This would increase site traffic, I believe.

    What I mean is, say there’s a post called “New Obama Ad Condemns Palin’s Wink,” and some random person, Dave, comments on it. He has to give his email address to comment… so then the next day a different person, Joe, comments on the same post. Is it possible to set it up so that automatically, Dave would get an email notifying him that Joe has responded to his comment and that he should check it out??

    Afraid that is not possible here.

    My understanding is that we may see email notification for comments on the next big upgrade here which will probably be in December (my estimate). The commenter would have to choose to have the comment emails sent to them when they comment though. I expect it will be a checkbox or something like that.

    I hope to see this introduced in the next version too. Maybe then I’ll be able to follow-up on WordPress.com blog posts that I have commented on.

    You can do that already. In your Dashboard, there’s a section that says “My Comments” where the comments before and after yours on any wordpress.com blog can be seen.

    Right lizii, and thanks– I understand that– but again, that’s only for ME, the owner of the blog. That’s not what I’m talking about here. I’d like to set it up so that once someone comments on a post on my blog, they get notified when someone else comments on the same post– thereby encouraging the first person to come back and visit again.

    Get it? So, what do people think? Not possible? Can we get a wordpress admin to confirm that?

    @ lizii

    You’re so right! It’s always been there and I think I’ve accidentally clicked on MY COMMENTS once or twice max but up until now, it never registered what it does. Thanks!

    @debatable, my comment was directed at shimworld, and yes, I do understand what you’re talking about :) and no, this isn’t possible, but you can have “comment RSS” if people care to subscribe. The thing is, not everyone that comments on your blog really wants to receive and email every time someone comments. Think about people who get hundreds of comments; it’s not necessarily a good idea for the whole hundred people to get an email just because someone else commented.

    Even if it is a checkbox, it is the owner of the blog that checks the box and enables the function. For the commenter, it could get annoying. If they want to know about future comments, they should me the one that checks the box.

    @dizzywoodfan99, don’t get what?

    @debatable From your dashboard if you click on “My Comments” you will see all the comments YOU’VE made on ANY blog and see all comments made after you. It’s basically a feed to the comments of blogs you’ve posted on. So if someone commented on your blog, they can go to their dashboard and follow up on comments made to your post. If they are particularly interested in your post, they can choose to subscribe to the RSS of your comments. I would honestly be extremely angry if wordpress gave the option to blog owners to have comment notifications sent to anyone who commented on their post. That would hella spam my inbox and piss me off.
