E-mail notifications of new posts on my blog are not working

  • Unknown's avatar

Whenever I do a new post on my blog (goughpubs.wordpress.com), no e-mail notifications are going out to my subscribers. I have subscribed to my blog and used to get a notification — I did this to make sure this feature was working. But now nothing comes through, not to me and not to others (I’ve checked).

What can I do to fix this? Help!

Every subscriber can choose whether to receive posts by email and their frequency or in the WPcom Reader.

Please check again under https://wordpress.com/following/edit/ that either your default setting or the setting specific to your posts is to receive email notifications of new posts instantly. Also, check Delivery Settings here https://wordpress.com/me/notifications that the box to block emails from WPcom is not checked.

Also, sometimes unsubscribing and resubscribing fixes this issue.

If that still hasn’t solved this problem, please post back here.

    Hi Jennifer,
    Thanks for posting!
My default settings were fine — set to receive e-mails. The Delivery Settings were also fine — box to block e-mais was not checked. And before posting my query, I’d unsubscribed and resubscribed, but that had no effect.
The problem doesn’t seem to be limited to only me, as others also are not receiving e-mail alerts of posts. This makes me wonder if there is some WP setting or tool or widget or something that has malfunctioned or needs to be reinstalled.

Unfortunately, this problem seems to be a common occurrence here in the forums, but without a real resolution, so I’ll tag this for Staff assistance.

Before that, what will be helpful for Staff to know:
    1. Whether the subscribers are or are not WPcom members;
    2. Provide usernames and/or email address of those members who have stopped receiving notifications (if you include an email address here, the forum software will hide them from view-but Staff members will be able to see them).

    Hi again —
There are either 69 or 72 followers on my site (not as many as some blogs, but still a fair number). (The main blog page shows 72 followers in addition to me; the number on the My Sites page shows 69.)

Some followers are on WordPress themselves, others I’m not so sure. (It’s hard for me to know if they’re on WordPress.org, for instance.)

I sent out a post this morning to ask them to RSVP if they got the e-mail notification. One person did. (I also got the notification in e-mail, but had unsubscribed and resubscribed yesterday — up until yesterday, I was getting zero notifications of my own posts so that part did work.) One of my local critique group partners is also one of my blog followers, and she did not get the e-mail notification.

I’m not sure how to get you the e-mail addresses — all I can see on my Stats page is their user names and how long they’ve been following me (which ranges from one month to three years).

I’m stumped but also very frustrated about this. I know I’m not alone — as you mentioned, there are too many others out there who have exactly this same problem for this to be a local problem with my site. Any help WordPress can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi there,

Thank you for all of the details you provided about this. Can you please give me the usernames of any WordPress.com followers who expected to receive email notifications but didn’t? I can use that information to investigate the issue on this end.

I’d be happy to do that, Rachel. Is there an e-mail address I can use? (Would rather do that than post here.)
    Thank you!

Sure thing! You can send an email directly to support AT wordpress DOT com, and include a link to this forum post for reference.

Let me know here once you’ve sent that email and I can take a look. :)
