Easiest way to implement fee-based site access?
-
Hi All:
I’m developing what will eventually become a subscription-based (or fee-based) informational site. The basic concept (which is fairly common on the web) is to require users to pay a an annual registration fee to access the site (say $10 or $20).
I have no idea what the easiest (and/or best) way to implement this is? Any general tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
I can imagine a few ways…with the simplest being to provide users a PayPal account…they pay the fee that way…I get a confirmation that their fee has been paid…and I send them a temporary username/password to the site (or something like that). Is there anything wrong with this implementation model?
Alternately, I have no idea if there are established online services that are set up to handle this type of transaction (user pays a fee, gets access to a site). Actually, now that I think of it, I guess pr0n sites all use this model, LOL. (But I still don’t know how they do it, and no—my site isn’t a pr0n site and I don’t want it to be associated with pr0n sites!)
Thanks,
Scott -
I’ve looked into this a little. Drupal’s Ubercart module allows you to change a user’s role when they make a purchase, and you can use roles to allow or deny access to different part of your site. I still find Drupal somewhat overwhelming, I think I’ll need to spend a year playing with it to feel at home with it, but it is very powerful. Probably not the easiest solution, but a very solid one if you can get your head around Drupal
