Easy-to-find search field
-
Please provide the option for a search field to be placed high in a window. I have just started using the Blask theme and like everything about it EXCEPT for the fact that the only option for the search field is in the bottom footer. That means that a user has to scroll clear to the bottom of the page to even know it is available. In this theme I would greatly appreciate a widget to place it in the left hand sidebar. Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I should add that in Blask search is not available at all on the home page — which is arguably the place you need it most. Would very much appreciate option to put widgets in the sidebar. Thanks!

Note that search widgets can be placed only in areas where widgets can be installed such as sidebars and footer areas. Also note that widgets have visibility settings https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility
You need to understand how dynamic category pages work. They automatically update but static pages do not.
You start by assigning the minimal amount of relevant categories to each post that actually describe the content in the post.
Selective assignment of relevant categories and tags to your posts can attract more views. (Categories and tags can be assigned only to posts, not to pages.)
All support docs are at https://en.support.wordpress.com/
Search for categories

https://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=tags

The combined total of categories and tags on any post must not exceed 15 or it will not display on Categories and Tags pages and in the WordPress.COM Reader. After removal of the excess categories and/or tags note it may take several days for your posts to begin displaying there and in the Reader. Also, note that posts do not display in the Reader forever. Posts only display in the WordPress.COM Reader for 60 days.
re: custom menu
This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
(1) All posts on the front page.
(2) Or a static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page.By default the front page of a blog displays all published posts in reverse chronological order with the most recently published post on top. When we publish a post on WordPress software the software automatically creates the same entry in the Archives, and on the dynamic (automatically updating) Categories and Tags pages in accord with the Categories and Tags we assign to that post.
So when we create custom menu and add the dynamic (automatically updating) category pages to that custom menu we create the appearance (not the reality) of posting to more than one page.
You need to be aware that:
1. There are differences between posts and pages described here
https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/2. There are differences between static pages we bloggers create https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ that will not automatically update, and dynamic category pages created by the software when you publish a post which will automatically update https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/.
3. We organize posts by category assignment prior to publication. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/ and when we publish posts the dynamic category pages they automatically display on are determined by the categories we assign to them.
So the process you need to use is:
a. Assign Categories to your Posts. https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories
b. Create a custom menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#1-create-a-custom-menu
c. Add only the dynamic category page links into the custom menu that you want to appear in that menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-category-pages and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus
d. Create pages and sub-pages for static content, not for posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
e. Add any custom links and other items like static pages and sub-pages into your custom menu
https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-custom-links https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-pages
and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menusPlease see https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

thanks so much for all this information! It will prove very helpful. But you stated my problem in your first sentence. I realize that a search widget can only be installed where widgets can be used. I am asking a tweak to the theme that allows widgets in that sidebar. that is not an option now.

My hope here was to pop something in the “suggestion box.” Is there a better place to do that?

There is no ability to tweak the way any theme functions here. WordPress.com is a turnkey blogging platform with off the shelf themes. One can tweak theme appearance only (not functionality) with the appropriate upgrade that allows for CSS editing.

I think I am not communicating very clearly. I just had a help session with one of the amazingly helpful wordpress chat support people. At the end, he suggested that I suggest this change to the theme as the themes are updated from time to time. He suggested i do that here. that is what I am doing — hoping that this idea might reach the people who develop and update the themes. I realize there is nothing I can do at this time. I’m just trying to find a way to suggest that it would be nice to see the next version of the theme include this improvement.

This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme use the same underlying template found on the live demo site for each theme. Any changes made by Staff to any theme template will impact every site wearing the same theme.
Yes you can post as many Ideas into this forum as you wish. Yes Staff always make the suggestion that we post suggestions here. And, yes Staff will review them all, but never hold your breath while waiting for a response. If and only if Staff decide to provide what you request they will contact you.
Bottom line: When it comes to theme changes like the one you suggest there are multitudes of bloggers using the current theme as is, and they may not appreciate any changes to it at all. Staff always keep that in mind when it comes to theme change suggestions.
