  It is my understanding that in order to have a store on your website, you have to upgrade. Can that be done through premium, or does it have to have the business upgrade?

  Also, is there a way to have your store independently run without using shopify, etc and just doing it yourself? If so, how?

  WordPress.com Business is really the only automated ecommerce solution on WordPress.com:

  WordPress.com Business [Redirects to Plans]

  What many people do is simply include menu or sidebar links to an etsy store, for example.

  Moving to a self hosted WordPress.org blog will give you more “do it yourself” options. However, they do end up being considerably more work in many cases.
