Ecommerce on WordPress.com – Conflicting Info

The WordPress.com site is very confusing over whether or not I can add ecommerce to my WordPress.com site.

For instance, this page has a sidebar halfway down the page that says you can now use ecommerce with the Business upgrade (https://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/com-or-org/) and the billboard on this page mentions the ability to have an Online Store (https://wordpress.com/learn-more/?v=site). This page no longer exists (https://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/) and the Support search results for topics on the matter are unhelpful. The Forum seems to have many responses from members stating that a self-hosted wordpress.org site is required for ecommerce but then what is all that content about the Business upgrade?

    Please advise. Can I or can’t I have ecommerce on WordPress.com? Must I self-host?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no secure payments system here at wordpress.COM and you cannot add a shopping cart to sites hosted by wordpress.COM.

E-commerce options have been removed here at WordPress.COM. Secure payment systems are not available here at wordpress.COM. You need a wordpress.ORG install. Please read this https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/e-commerce-22?replies=17#post-2575955

Provided you are selling only what you yourself make or a service that you personally provide on a wordpress.COM site you have two options.

    (1) PayPal – Know that the only instructions that will work for posting a PayPal donation button on a WordPress.com blog are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
Note that the PayPal email link is not supported and PayPal customization options are not supported either https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/paypal-button-41?replies=12#post-2517229 This is not likely to be changed any time soon, if at all.

    (2) If you set up an eCommerce site somewhere else online you can create a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ and include a custom link to that site in it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links

Some bloggers create a contact form https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ on a page and after the people have made a PayPal donation they provide the link to a private page for downloading files. Maybe that will work for you.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/

If what I provided above at (1) and (2) do not suit you, then this guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform: Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site where you can set up a secure payment system https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/

We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
    (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
    (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.

Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.me/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page.

Some Jetpack solutions are here http://jetpack.me/support/

Others are in the Jetpack support forum at WordPress.org
    http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack

However, if help cannot be found at either one then they can file a Jetpack support ticket here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/?jetpack=needs-service

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.
    Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page

So on this page, where it very clearly states you can have an online store, that is just outdated info right on your main landing page? https://wordpress.com/learn-more/?v=site

That’s a very misleading statement, and disappointing since we have already created a site and upgraded to premium service based on the promise of having an online store.

    Hi there,

That page indeed says you can create an online store, though it doesn’t say we support integrated ecommerce options – it’s possible to have an online store here using an order form-PayPal button combination. But I agree that the wording is potentially misleading. I’ll let our design and marketing team know about this so they can update it.

since we have already created a site and upgraded to premium service based on the promise of having an online store.

When we did have ecommerce options those were only available with the Business Plan, not with Premium, so with Premium you would have been unable to use ecommerce options even if we did still offer them. Let me know if you’d prefer to cancel your Premium Plan and I can help you with that.

The Daily Post link you referenced is for a post published in 2013. The Daily Post is a blog that publishes the latest news on WordPress.com, and there is no guarantee that something published in 2013 will still be valid three years later. The ecommerce options mentioned in that post were removed at the start of 2016.

For up to date information about our current plans please see here:
