I’m in uncharted territory. I created fodshouston.wordpress.com. Now we want to move it to a self-hosted wordpress.org (http://test.friendsofdownsyndrome.org/) When we did the export/import, the theme EDIN does NOT look the same. And non of the files, menus, widgets showed up in the right place. Grateful for your help!!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi kimitas1,
This is because themes can not be downloaded from WordPress.com. Here’s a guide to the content that you can export: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
You can download Edin for WordPress.org sites here: https://wordpress.org/themes/edin/
If you want more help moving your site, you might also want to consider this Guided Transfer option: https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
Hope this helps!

Great. I’m seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. What would be the order of tasks to get the site to look like the demo? Would I download the proper theme? Add it to my dashboard. Then change it under appearance?

Once you download Edin theme (.zip file) for WordPress.org, you can follow these steps to add the theme to your self-hosted site:
1. Log in to the WordPress Administration Panels.
2. Select the Appearance panel, then Themes.
3. Select Add New.
4. Either use the Search or Filter options to locate a Theme you would like to use.
5. Click on the Preview link to preview the Theme or the Install Now link to upload the Theme to your blog,
6. Or use the Upload link in the top links row to upload a zipped copy of a Theme that you have previously downloaded to your machine. You will need to set up widgets for your new site as well. This guide might come in handy during the moving process: https://move.wordpress.com/

As I follow the steps, it shows the EDIN is already there. And it currently shows the theme to be EDIN. When I try to ADD NEW>upload, it gives this error message:
Installing Theme from uploaded file: edin.1.2.6 (1).zip
Unpacking the package…Installing the theme…
Destination folder already exists. /home2/fds/test.friendsofdownsyndrome.org/wp-content/themes/edin/
Theme install failed.

I’m also realizing that when I did the export/import to move the blog, it seems to have captured a VERY OLD version of it. Several pages are missing.
Can you also clarify: should media, posts, widgets, all transfer?
-
Posts are exported, but widgets can’t be moved. You will need to set those up on your new site. Media like images and uploads may need to be transferred manually. I would recommend checking out the support doc I linked to above for a more detailed explanation about what can be exported: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
As far as the error message on your new site, the best place for you to find support for this will be in the WordPress.org support forums. This forum focuses on support for WordPress.com sites. You can find the WordPress.org support forums here: https://wordpress.org/support/

Thanks. I will move my questions to the .org support forum. But one last question. The XML file that I exported only had a small percentages of my pages. It’s as if it only exported the blog as it appeared many months ago. Can you address this?
-
No problem! When you exported the file did you select “Export All”? You should have received a .zip file of the export files, and if your blog was larger it may contain more than one file. If the .zip file contains more than one file, you will need to import each one of those .xml files individually.
When you import those files to your new site, if your new site is only showing partial content after the import, you can try re-running the import again to get any missing posts. Let me know how it goes. If you are still having trouble we can try to get more help.
