Edin Theme – category image and post troubles

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having trouble with categories and finding my posts! Sorry, I’m new on here and have tried searching with a multitude of word combos and can’t seem to find what I need. So apologies if this is a repetition.

I’m using the Edin theme which is a free one. I chose it because I want a static front page. I have paid for no customizations at all.

Now the issues I am having are:

    1. When I first put in the static page, I couldn’t find my actual posts anywhere. On the customize menu, under ‘front’ there is a drop down for ‘Posts page’. On there, I have selected nothing, which is probably where the problem is. The reason though is it only offers me an option of the pages I have created (which would make sense). Do I need to be creating one with all the posts on that? How would I do that? If I pick any of the existing pages, it puts all my posts under my static front page and that is quite unattractive, especially since i have 2 other thumbnails on there.

So for now I have created a few categories and put them under the menu heading ‘blog’ and manually categorized each of my posts under one of those categories. I like it and it works, but I’d also like to be able to view all posts in one place.

    2. I am having trouble with the category headings. I have created a 4 categories and assigned the posts under like I said. What I would like is for each category to have a ‘featured image’. I seem to be able to do this on pages and posts, but not for the categories. I just get a big white band under the site title with a font with the name of the category (thats what i want to replace). Is this possible in this theme?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks
    Susan

    Hi Susan,
First, if you haven’t already done so, familiarize yourself with the difference between posts and pages. The Post vs. Page support page is a good place to do that.

Second, at Settings > Reading when you selected a static from page you should have also selected a page which would display your posts, often referred to as a blog page (your reverse chronological stream of posts).

Finally, an easy way to provide a link to your posts page is to include it as an item in a custom menu. A custom menu can include links to all or selected posts and pages, drop-down menus to child (or sub-) posts and pages, the portfolio and its projects, external links, etc.

Correction: “static from page” should be “static front page.”

Hey musicdoc1… thanks so much for that. Exactly what I needed.

Are you at all familiar with the category headings bit? I’ve created a custom menu under all my posts where I have categorized into columns/segments. I am unable to get an image to appear on the category page. Is that a limitation of the theme? Or is there a way to do it that I’m not seeing?

    Anyone?

For anyone else who might have the posts disappearing problem in the future, here’s all the steps. I first created a page and called it ‘Blog’. Then went to My sites > Settings > Reading and under the blog posts drop down and picked the ‘Blog’ page.

I then wen to My sites > Appearance > Menu and added the page to my menu. Then copied the page link and put it under the drop down menu item for ‘Blog’. All set on that now!

Not sure what you mean by “custom menu under all my posts.” Are you referring to the category and tags lists? These aren’t menus. Custom menus are created and managed at dashboard admin panel > Appearance > Menus, or via My Sites as you’ve noted.

The term “category page” with respect to WordPress.com website typically refers to automatically generated archives pages. You can’t add images to them, but on the theme you’re using category archives pages display the full posts, and therefore contain all of the images of each post in each category. Example: https://carrotsandpeace.wordpress.com/category/parenting/.

Now, you may construct custom “category pages” using shortcode, e. g. a display posts shortcode limited by adding a category “argument.” But you’d be able to add images to such a page.

Can you provide an example of a “category page” (URL please) on which you find that you are “unable to get an image to appear?”

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh I’m sorry… i missed this!!

https://carrotsandpeace.wordpress.com/category/parenting/ this is one of my category pages. I have a few more. The way i created them is by creating a menu (under appearance) and then assigning some items under category there to the menu as a sub item under ‘blog’. Does that make sense?

Thats when i first had problems with things not showing up unless i manually assigned them to a category. Thats what we fixed in my last round of questions.

Now what I want to do is get an image to go where the large white area which has the word parenting in it. To make it less boring and blah…

    Yes.

No, you can’t, not without CSS customization at least. Category archives pages are automatically generated. The large white space your refer to is something that’s been built into this theme. See, for example, the following category pages on the demo:
    https://edindemo.wordpress.com/category/photos/
    https://edindemo.wordpress.com/category/writing/.
I tested the category description fields in the Menu Structure and in an Edit Category page (Posts > Categories > Edit Category) to see if I could add images instead of, or in addtion to, text. The result was negative.

The similar Motif theme has very little space below the category archives page title and the first post. See https://motifdemo.wordpress.com/category/artwork/, for example.

    Thanks musicdoc1. Too bad…

I’ll look into the Motif theme. It does seem similar at first look. Not loving the default fonts but the colors are better. And I like that the posts need you to click in to read fully. I might have to look into paying for some design customization.

Speaking of which, if i pay for premium is what I am asking for possible? Or is it just a limitation of the theme as a whole?

I’m not sure. CSS customization is unfamiliar to me. If you’d like a definite answer to this question you might add a “modlook” tag to the right sidebar here to bring the topic to the attention of Staff, and then await their response.

Or is it just a limitation of the theme as a whole?

CSS customization allows you to change certain aspects of the the theme’s layout, color, fonts, header and widget appearance, etc. It takes you beyond the default limitations.

Thanks so much! you’ve been super helpful

    You’re welcome.

What I would like is for each category to have a ‘featured image’.

You could create your own special post archives pages using customized display posts shortcode on each such page, topped by a featured image, or with the image embedded above the shortcode. Featured images, excerpts, and dates are among the features that can be added to the shortcode using “arguments.”

The automatically generated post archives pages would still exist, but you needn’t link to them in the header area menu. Link to your customized archives pages instead.

I meant to say, “The automatically generated category archives pages…”

  • Looks like musicdoc1 has provided some excellent guidance here! Susan, if you still need help with anything, just let me know.

Hello musicdoc1 and kathyrn. Thanks for the help. I got as far as I could with Edin and decided to take your advice MD and switch to Motif. It really is working quite nicely for me.

I have a question: in the demos I saw the default blog posts page had a way to display a snippet and required you to click through to read the full post. I am not able to get it to do that. Is there a way. Right now it displays each blog in full.

  • Glad Motif is working well!

in the demos I saw the default blog posts page had a way to display a snippet and required you to click through to read the full post.

You can use the More tag for that – here’s how:

Thanks a ton Kathryn. I’ll do that. Need to go back and do it on each individual post, I see.

One more question. Hopefully my last for a while… sorry.

How do I take off the social shares buttons from the home page? http://carrotsandpeace.com/

And how can i put on my social media buttons on the side bad or top or menu? (for now i have a twitter feed, but wanted just buttons for the rest).

  • Need to go back and do it on each individual post, I see.

Yes, the More tag needs to go on every post for which you’d like to display an excerpt. The alternative would be to switch to a theme that’s designed to display excerpts on the blog index.

How do I take off the social shares buttons from the home page?

Just uncheck the Sharing checkbox on that page:

Here’s a guide to adding social links to any widget area:

Great! Thanks a ton. I will explore. Have a good week.
