Edin Theme Front Page Layout

I’ve started using the edin them as it’s nice and clear, however, I can’t seem to only display the most recent blog on the front page. With new blog, they get added to the front page, creating a big long list, where as I’d prefer to just have the most recent.

Very new to this, so apologies if it should be something obvious

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

I see that the site https://fantasyrugbyxv.wordpress.com/ presently has the Sela theme activated.

Regarding the Edin theme, are you referring to displaying just the latest post on a front page assigned to display the posts page, or on a static front page with the front page template assigned? Also, if the latter, do you want to display the latest post in one of the three optional featured page areas, or in one of the three optional widget areas of the front page template. In either case, it’s a simple matter to display a single post on the front page.

Sorry for the slow response. I was talking about the https://superrugbyscout.wordpress.com/ site, which is using Edin. Yes, effectively I want to static front page to just show the most recent blog post in one of the three assigned spaces in the template, rather than, as you can see if you click on the link, showing all the blog posts down vertically. I assumed it would be something straight-forward, but was struggling during the week to work out how.
    Thanks

    Thanks.

Regarding the third featured page area on the front page:
As long as Infinite Scroll is disabled, the number of posts displayed on a blog page, and on archives pages, is determined by the “Blog pages show at most” setting at Reading Settings. See the Reading Settings support page.

Regarding the Recent Posts widget in the footer area:
There is a “Number of posts to show” setting in the widget.

However, note that the “Blog pages show at most” setting will also apply to the your “Blog” page, as well as author, category, tag, date (year, month, day), etc. archives pages, as well as search results.

To display only one post in one of the featured pages areas of a page with the front page template assigned, without affecting the number of posts displayed on the blog, archives, and search result pages, if possible, would require CSS customization. See the Custom CSS support page. If you’re interested in going in this direction, then you may either submit a separate request to the CSS Customization forum, or add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

Thanks musicdoc1, very helpful to understand what to do and also limitations. Given I’m just using the standard, non-premium functionality, I’ll park the custom CSS for now. Do you off-hand of any similar themes with the same type of template, but without the limitation of applying the blog post setting to both front page and blog page ? It’s not a big deal, but obviously there are a lot of themes to play with.
    Thanks

No, I can’t name one offhand. I believe there are themes which display a certain number of posts, the last three for example, on a certain template, but I don’t recall the theme names. There may be themes with an recent posts feature for which you can adjust, at Customize > Theme Options, the number of posts displayed on a page assigned to a certain template.

One option you might want to consider would be to insert Display Posts Shortcode in a text widget, customized to display one post and to include an image (from the featured image). It might have a code such as the following:
    [display-posts image_size="large" posts_per_page="1"]

The Sela theme has three optional front-page widget areas available on the Front Page Template that correspond to the three optional featured page areas of the same template on the Edin theme.
