Edin Theme menu problem in Internet Explorer

Edin Theme in Internet Explorer
Hi, I’ve developed a site for a charity, initially on WordPress.com as a test site which we’re now migrating to WordPress.org this week. I chose the Edin theme for them, and have been working in Chrome and it’s lovely, but I’ve just viewed both versions in Internet Explorer and the top two menus don’t show up in Internet Explorer, though both do work in Chrome. Any idea what the problem is please? Their current site hosting contract ends on Monday so this is now desperate to sort out! The site is set as private as it’s only a development site and still to be tweaked in a few places. Many thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Maybe the WordPress.com staff can see the site, but as a forum volunteer, I’m unable to help since I obviously don’t have access to your WordPress.com site, and you didn’t post a link to the WordPress.org site….so I can’t see what could be the issue I’m afraid.

The most recent stable IE browser version is IE11 and there are still folks running IE9 which was released in 2011 and which is no longer supported here.
If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

Hi all, thanks for your replies. This is tricky as the WordPress.com site is private as it includes some confidential development pages and the WordPress.org site is still being finished so is on a local server at the hosting company at the moment. But the problem is in IE 11 and it’s simple to describe: using the Front Page template and with the main menu and secondary menu activated, you see everything from the bottom up to the top of the featured image, then you see the black WordPress menu (where you go to the dashboard etc), but the site menu and secondary menu don’t appear in IE 11 though they show in Chrome. I’m not using compatibility mode. So I wondered if there’s something buggy in the theme perhaps? Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
Though I wasn’t able to view your site in IE11 because it is set to private, I did build a test site and was not able to replicate the menu bars not displaying. I noticed that in addition to your overall site being set to private, you also have quite a few pages set to private. Those pages won’t appear in any menu bars unless you’re logged in as an administrator, so if you were viewing your site as a user when viewing the site on IE11 that might be the problem?

Hi. The site is now live on http://www.carefreekids.org and still has the same problem in IE11 (I realise this is the WordPress.org version now, but the test site on WordPress.com is showing the same problem and I’m looking to use Edin on another WordPress.com site too, it’s such a lovely theme). It’s not connected with the private pages, I know they don’t appear on the menu, it’s the whole menu bar at the top missing when I view it in IE, but if I swap to Chrome it’s there. Literally there is nothing between the header and my browser. I’ve also tried switching on/off the secondary menu but that made no difference. I just wondered if there might be some rogue CSS or something in the theme (I haven’t touched any CSS in the WordPress.org/.com versions either, by the way)? I’m asking people in the charity to see if they can test it in different browsers too. Thanks for your help.

Hiya,
Sadly there isn’t much which we can do to support issues on WordPress.org sites (you would need to post on the appropriate .org forum), however I did still go ahead and check out your site on IE11 and it the menu bar was there for me:
I’m not sure if you’ve checked the site out on a different machine running IE11 yet, but you might want to just to see if there is some extension or plugin which is causing the menu bar to not display correctly; but it does seem to be working on a basic installation (I don’t generally use IE11, so I don’t have any extensions running).

Hi
I appreciate what you’re saying about WordPress.org, but this problem is also occurring identically on the original WordPress.com site I set up to develop and test what became the WordPress.com site. So it can’t be down to an extension or plugin on WordPress.com, as of course they don’t have them! It was the fact that the problem was identical on both .com and .org and first spotted on WordPress.com that made me post here (at that point the charity hadn’t even got a WordPress.org install or host). Also the Edin Theme didn’t appear on WordPress.org until 22 Sep so I doubt many over there are using it yet. Is there some way I can send you a screenshot of the WordPress.com site? Many thanks

Sorry, just so I’m not confusing you, I posted then using my own login, not the Carfreekidse11 login which is the one for the charity I’m helping, I’m the same person and it’s the same issue!

I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear, I was asking if there was any plugin or extension on your browser. Not on the site itself. I have no doubt that it wasn’t showing for you on the WordPress.com site for you, I am just having problems replicating a lack of menus using IE11 at all. Have you tried using another instance of IE11?
-
Oh I see! No I don’t usually use Internet Explorer so I haven’t any extensions or plugins, it’s exactly as Microsoft supply it. I literally just used IE that day as a test and because it’s only on IE that I’ve spotted a problem, I concluded there might be something wrong in the theme itself. It looks fine, indeed lovely everywhere else and I’ve converted the charity away from Joomla to being WordPress fans.
I’m tempted to make the test site on WordPress.com live so you can see it, but when I had two test sites live before so the charity could compare two different themes with the same content my WordPress.com account got suspended as WordPress thought I was creating spam sites, so I’m wary of doing that now.
I am just trying to be helpful raising this, not moaning, by the way!

I understand, and we always appreciate it!
I just took a look using another two Windows machines which are using IE11 and the menu bar is appearing in each of those as well. Just to make sure, this is the menu bar which, in the image which I linked to before, starts with Home, then News, About Us, Children and Schools, etc., yes?
I just want to make sure we’re talking about the same thing, and we’re not going in circles.

Yes, it’s that menu bar. That is strange. I have asked the charity to try to find some people to check the site using different browsers and devices, I don’t know how long it will take them but hopefully a few have IE11 and I can get a view if it’s just a one off or a wider problem. Hopefully it’s just something happening to me (though why, I don’t know, I don’t have the knowledge to mess it up!!) and I hope I haven’t been wasting your time, it just seemed to be worth reporting in case it was a wider issue. Thanks for your attempts though. Best wishes.
