Edin Theme – Pictures
-
Hi,
I have created a website but my pictures look very oddly cropped in the individual posts. Is this because of the size. Is there a size I should use.
I was also wondering whether it is possible to have a picture on all the pages including the front page. I tried to do it using the side bar but it does not seem to work right.
Lastly – would it be possible to use an excerpt rather than the first paragraph of the post?
Thanks!

Could you please provide a link to a few posts where you find the cropping doesn’t look right? I’ll take a look.

You could upload a site logo (which doesn’t have to be a logo – it can be any graphic) in the Customizer under Site Title, Tagline, and Logo.

Try adding a custom excerpt to those posts, it should be displayed on the front page automatically:

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kathryn,
Sorry for the delay but I have been on vacation.

These are the links where the pics look odd. The pictures are just samples so I could see how it looks.
I tried adding my head shot as a logo but it is very small and just pushes the whole site down. Is there a way to add it on the side (similar to my experience page) or the upper left hand corner?
What I want to use the excerpt for is actually a page not a blog post. Does it still work the same way. In any case I cannot find the “screen options” button.
If you could assist it would be much appreciated.

The recommended size for featured images on pages is 1230 wide by 1230 high. That said, since the featured images in Edin are background images that get stretched and cropped depending on the screen size, they work best with images that can withstand that sort of change in display in different contexts. Examples are a pattern graphic, an abstract image, or a photo that can be more flexible in the way it’s framed. A close-up of a face is probably never going to work well no matter what the original size, by its nature. :)
For the engagement ring photo, the image looks distorted because the original graphic is very small, only 250 by 250px:
Try uploading a much larger image.

Your image widget in the right sidebar will appear on pages if you assign the page to the default page template. For example, your About page (homepage) is currently set to use the grid page template, but if you change that so it’s using the default template, your sidebar with your image should appear:

In most themes, including Edin, Excerpts are only available on posts, not pages. If you’d like to split a page into multiple chunks, you could try the nextpage tag:

Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for your help. I have made some amendments to suit the site design. I have also rethought my concept. Instead of making it a personalised site I will leave it as a site just for my project and create a separate one for myself. Therefore my question – is there any way to change the URL for the site?

Sure, the guide is here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/
Be very careful when changing it to follow the instructions fully. :)

Thanks! I did it! https://fracturedthefilm.wordpress.com/
Do I always have to add a new page as a new blog post if I want it to appear in the grid page format? -
-
Hi Kathryn,
Well this is what I did with my new blog post “I promise, I promise”. I created it as a subpage of the parent page. But when I wrote just a new blog post not a new page it didn’t show up? -
I think there’s a little bit of confusion between posts and pages.
Posts and pages are different:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/Only pages can have parents and children.
The grid page only displays its child (sub) pages. Posts are not part of the grid page structure.
I created it as a subpage of the parent page.
Posts are always part of the blog, and can’t have parents or children. It’s only possible to set a parent or child for pages.
Let me know if this helps clear up the confusion.

Hi Kathryn,
Ok so if I add a post it will not show up in my grid page structure. Only pages will.
What do you recommend for updating it as a blog? Will it be best to delete my pages and just keep it as per the original default setting? I just don’t like having a page that is extremely long.Is there another design that would allow me to add posts and for them to appear as individual widgets instead of having the lengthy blog.
I thought this one did but turns out I was wrong! :)Christin

One option would be to use add the Recent Posts widget to one of your front-page or footer widget areas:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/recent-posts-widget/The Display WordPress posts widget is a similar widget, but with a few more options:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/recent-posts-widget/You could give them a whirl and see if you get the effect you want.
