Edit/customization buttons missing when I visit site

    Hi,

I was just setting up my wordpress.com site on a new theme – messing around with templates and stuff – and looking at plugins.

Now I can’t see the “edit”/”customize” buttons at the bottom right when I’m on one of my pages (which I could before). There’s also no notification bell on the top right – though my profile pic, the “write” button, and stuff on the top-left is still there.

I can still edit/customize pages by going through the theme editor but it’s much more inconvenient.

Does anyone know why this might have happened/how I can fix it? Everything was fine since like 12 hours ago (when I applied the theme) until just now, not sure what caused it.

I’ve tried switching back to a default theme and it didn’t work. Same issue on all browsers & my phone.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello,

The Edit/Customize options that you saw before the change were part of the action bar! This is a setting which is only available on sites where no plugin or third-party theme is installed. When the third-party theme was activated, it changed the settings on your site, and the action bar was removed.

In general, you would not need to go through the theme Editor to manage your page content, but because the two existing pages on your site both use custom templates, the Homepage template and the Archives Template respectively, you will need to manage the templates through the Editor. However, when you create new pages that do not use their own templates, you will be able to edit those through the page list rather than the theme Editor.

As for the notifications bell, this should not have been impacted by the change which removed the action bar, but I can see that this is site specific, as the notification bell does appear on your other site. It’s possible that the notification icon is hidden because all of the notices have been seen already. If you receive a new notification, such as a new comment on your site, does this make the notification bell reappear in the admin bar?

Thanks for letting me know, that all makes sense.

It’s a little bit annoying though, because previously I could be on a page (homepage/archive) or any post and use the action bar to quickly edit the content or template. Is there really no way to get that ability back? It was actually still working for around 12 hours or so after I upgraded the site and had the third-party theme & plugins – but I’m guessing it was just delayed in being removed.

It’s probably unrelated but on my Jetpack activity log I see the “server” changed some things relating to comments but I don’t know why. Maybe I caused that to happen by mistake? It’s probably not related anyway. (here’s a screenshot of the log: https://ibb.co/v1Pftfh)

The fact that the notification bell went away was what confused me. I just left a test comment on a post and it didn’t seem to come back. And this is probably unrelated, but I think around the time this happened I noticed a social media widget appear on my posts (at the bottom left) which I didn’t think was there before – and have since removed – but perhaps I just overlooked it initially.

Thanks again for letting me know why the options went away, but I wish there was a way to get them back…

  • Yes, local browser caching was most likely the reason why you were still able to see the option for a brief period of time. This is not related to a specific event on your activity log but related to the upgraded subscription.

Now that your site can use plugins, you can explore using plugins or codes to also add features and options to your dashboard. Here is a third-party resource that guides you into adding a specific code that can add an ‘Edit’ link to your posts:

In regards to the notification bell issue, is it possible for you to compare what you see on other browsers? To work optimally after your subscription upgrade, it might be best to clear your browser cache:

I’ve cleared my browser’s cache, the website’s cache, and disabled & re-enabled the toolbar in my user settings but the notification bell still doesn’t show up. The space it should occupy initially appears and then quickly goes away when I load the page.

When I tried another browser to test it (Edge), the admin toolbar didn’t actually show up at at all until I disabled and re-enabled it in the site settings. Then it did show up – with the notification bell as well. This issue also happened after I cleared my browser’s cache.

The bell does show up on other blogs and I can see it at the top-right currently on the forums.

Hi there! It’s very unusual that your notification bell doesn’t show up on only this one site, but the steps you’ve taken thus far seem to confirm that it’s browser or device specific. Can I get you to navigate to this page and paste in the thread here the unique URL that page gives you? If you’re not comfortable sharing this information publicly, we can move this to email. What I’m looking for is specific information about the browser you’re using so we can test further.

Would it be possible to continue over email just to be on the safe side since there’s some fairly personal information shown.

It does seem to be an issue with my browser/device. But I’ve also just logged on using a different laptop and had the issue again where the admin toolbar doesn’t show up at all until I go to the user settings page, disable “Show Toolbar when viewing site”, and then re-enable it. Not sure if it’s related but it’s not something that was happening before.

Please let me know which email I should contact. Thanks for all the help so far.
