Edit function

    Why does what I put in the edit pane not transfer over to the actual blog? I arrange text and pictures but when I preview it everything is different.
    The text box beneath the pictures disappears.
    The caption I write moves over to the right but I type it in the centre.
    The edit pane seems to be pretty damn useless!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Can you show me a draft post that shows this behavior so I can look into it?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, I’ll be creating a new post soon but I’m not sure how I go about showing it to you.

  • If you save it as a draft, rather than publishing it, I will be able to see it.

    Hi Jacob.
    I’ve now prepared a draft. Here’s the problems.
    The text box underneath the photos disappears and the text defaults across to the right in the preview version..
    When I put an extra line space between paragraphs it doesn’t transfer over to the preview version.
    If you look at photos 6 and 7 the text starts neatly underneath them. In the preview version it’s a couple of lines down. If I try to remove the lines then the text will start halfway across the page.
    I think I’ve partially solved the issue of the way text surrounds the photos in the preview version but not the edit version. I may have been using the wrong method to get the photos along side each other. But it doesn’t always work!
    Like I said in the beginning, what I do in the Edit version often bears no relation to what is in the preview version. It makes no sense and finding solutions within the WordPress system is very difficult.
    Looking forward to your comments,
    Geoff

  • What is the title of the draft? I’m not seeing any recent drafts. So if it is an older one, I’ll need to know which one.

    Hi Josh.
    As I said to you yesterday, I’ve had to publish my most recent draft as time was pressing. So there isn’t a draft any more. I’ll prepare another one in the next couple of days and let you know when it’s up there.
    Geoff

  • It doesn’t have to be a draft you are going to publish. It can be a test draft just for the purposes of testing.

    I’ve got my next post partly written so I’ll prepare it as a draft and put it up there for you to look at. It won’t be today tho as I’ll be on the road. I’ll let you know when I’ve done it.
    Geoff

  • Good deal, just keep me updated.

    Hi Josh.
    I’ve put up a draft for you to check, which I can delete later. It’s titled Germany Calling.
    The issue with placing pictures into the text and then managing how the text lines up with them seems to be getting easier to resolve. It may just be me getting better at it. But the problems with the captions still persists. To recap, the neat text box that sits beneath the picture in the editing view disappears in the preview. And the text defaults across to the right, which really spoils the look.
    If you can resolve these issues that would be great and if you want to point me towards any good advice then I’ll be happy to go there .
    Thanks,
    Geoff

  • It’s telling me that you are currently editing that draft. Not wanting to kick you out without warning, how about you just post here when you are finished editing.

    I’m not sure what you mean. I thought you would need to see both the edit pane and the preview pane to be able to determine what’s happening. It’s not a draft I ultimately want to save so it doesn’t worry me what you do with it. When you say ‘post it here’ what exactly do you mean?
    Geoff

  • When someone is editing a post and another administrator (or staff member) tried to get to the “edit” view for that post, we get blocked. Mostly because having multiple people editing at the same time causes the system to lose edits (unsurprisingly).

    I just wanted you to reply here when you were no longer editing that post. You no longer appear to be doing so, which means that now I can take a look.

  • So, the theme you are using (trvl) is designed with the captions aligned to the right. You should be able to override that by inserting this custom css:

    .wp-caption .wp-caption-text {
    text-align: right;
    }

    And change “right” to “center”.

    Thanks for that Josh, the caption issue is now resolved. Is there any way of getting a text box under the picture in the preview pane, same as the edit pane?
    Geoff

  • That is probably going to be a matter of styling the css again. The trvl theme is set to not have that box and just displays the caption.

    I would suggest making a post on the CSS Customization forum here:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

    Lots of good advice there and knowledgeable people.

    OK Josh, I’ll try that. Thanks very much for your help.
