edit links to a new window
-
I used to be able to edit an image so that if one clicked on it, the link would open a new window. If I’m linking to the site of the photographer who took the picture, for example, I don’t want my reader to lose my site from their window in the process. This option doesn’t appear to be available anymore with the new editing tools. Am I missing something? Is there a work-around? Why is this gone?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Melissa! This function is still available to you.
- When you’re in a post, click Add Media.
- Go to your Media Library and select the image you want to insert. But don’t insert yet…
- In the right-hand column of the Insert Media box, you’ll see a heading for “ATTACHMENT DISPLAY SETTINGS.”
- In the Link To field, choose where the image will link. There are four choices:
- None will remove the link completely.
- Media File will link the image to its original, full-size version.
- Attachment Page will link the image to its attachment page.
- Custom URL will link the image to a custom URL.
- Insert the Image.
That should do it. If you have questions at all, please check out:

Thank you for taking time to reply.
I do see all those options. I thought “Attachment Page” would work, but all that does is open the image within the frame of the blogsite. Won’t edit the link to an outside website.
Custom URL works BUT it doesn’t open the linked website in a new window. And that’s what I want it to do – I want the linked site to open in a new window. I see that if I put a link in text, I still have the option to “open in new window” but that option isn’t available for photos anymore. At least, I can’t find it.Does anyone know how to make a link to a new website that is attached to an image open in a new window?
Thanks in advance for suggestions..!

Hi again. To open a brand new window, you can add a bit of HTML code. Here’s how:
1. Open your latest Post.
2. Click on the Text tab in your editor (you are switching from the default Visual tab)
3. Within the HTML code, you’ll see this code between two < > brackets:
img class=”wp-image-1816 alignright” src=”http://melissakayallen.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/16thingswelearnedfromthemovies.jpg?w=788″ alt=”16thingswelearnedfromthemovies” width=”378″ height=”374″ /
That code tells us the image link, its alignment, its width and height.
After you see height=”374″, you will paste this: target=”new” before the / symbol.
You are assigning the image link the behavior of opening in a new window. Save your changes.
Give that a go and let me know how that workaround goes for you.
Thanks very much!

Why didn’t I think to go into the code? DUH!
Yep. That did the trick, though I had to place the code (target=”_blank”) in the “a href” bracket. So it looked like this:
I can’t figure out why WordPress would regress and get rid of this “open in new window” feature option on the image edit window. I use it ALL THE TIME and i can’t be the only one.
Thank you so much for guiding me through to a solution – really appreciate it!!
