Edit number of elements on a gallery/portfolio

  • Unknown's avatar

Can anyone tell me how I can edit my Book Covers portfolio gallery to have all the projects appear for which there are existing projects? As it is now, it’s set for a maximum of twelve images. I’d like to set it to add images as I add projects, for an infinite number of them, something like an infinite scroll on a blog posts page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

The setting that controls that is at My Site(s) > Settings > Writing > Content Types > Portfolio Projects. The number set at “Display _#_ per page” is the number of projects that will be displayed. It can be set in the hundreds, but it’s impractical to go very high due to the adverse affect on loading time.

See the Content Types section of the Writing Settings support page for relevant information and instructions.

Thanks again, musicdoc1. I started rethinking this, anyway, for the loading time. (And its why I plan on revising the layout and links for the photos gallery soon.)

The only thing I’m not fond of is the “Previous” link at the bottom of the page. It means, I guess, that it’s a link to previously posted images. To a first-time visitor, though, it’s unintuitive. One would expect a “Next” or “More” button at the bottom right of the first page one looks at, really.

    You’re welcome @robehle.

It means, I guess, that it’s a link to previously posted images.

That’s correct. The text of the link to additional projects, those published earlier, is up to the theme designer. It could say “Load More,” “Next,” or whatever they prefer. Changing that link text is possible, but I believe may require Custom CSS, which is a feature only of the Premium, Business, and eCommerce plans.

I’ll call for staff attention, in case there’s an alternative to CSS customization that I’m unaware of.

  • Since the text is from the template itself, it’s not possible to directly, change.

    staff-blorbo,

    Thanks. : -)

    @robehle
    ,

I don’t know if this information might be helpful. I’ve discovered the following differences in behavior of the link to additional projects, when the projects per page setting is fewer than the number of published projects, depending upon how a portfolio page is constructed:

    1. On the in built-in portfolio page (reached by adding “/portfolio” to your site URL), there will be an “Older Projects” link. When you click that link, according to my tests, all of the remaining projects are added. It doesn’t add them in increments equal to the projects per page setting at Content Types.

    2. On a page with the portfolio page template assigned, we get instead the “Previous” link, as you’ve reported. Unlike the “Older Posts” link that loads more projects in case 1, each click of the “Previous” link produces a subsequent page that displays another set of projects equal to the number chosen at the projects per page setting.

    3. On a page with Portfolio Shortcode inserted to display projects, the posts per page setting is ignored. By default all of the projects will be displayed. You may use the “showposts” attribute to limit the number of posts displayed, but this will not produce a link to additional projects.

It’s not clear to me why your built-in or default portfolio page, https://robehle.com/portfolio/, doesn’t produce an “Older Projects” link, as is the case in my tests, and instead displays all 16 projects, while your “Covers” page indicates that the posts per page setting is 12.

Perhaps staff can explain this discrepancy.

  • This particular theme has its own Portfolio Template, so it operates a bit different from others.

    staff-blorbo,

The discrepancy that I’ve reported is wrt our respective default portfolio pages, not wrt static pages with the portfolio page template assigned. On my test site, the default portfolio page (https://sbstage1.wordpress.com/portfolio/) has an “Older Projects” link, produced because the projects per page limit is fewer than the number of published projects. Conversely, on @robehle’s site the default portfolio page (https://robehle.com/portfolio/) doesn’t have an “Older Projects” link and displays 16 projects, though other pages displaying the portfolio suggest that the projects per page setting for the site is 12.
