Edit Page – everything appearing on the left
-
I’m trying to edit my site, but everything is appearing down the left-hand side of the page, only 1 character wide. When I look at the site online, it appears as it should. How do I get the edit page to appear as it should?
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi there,
Can you tell me a bit more about the trouble you are having? Does this affect a specific page or pages, or is it an issue with any page on the site that you try to edit?
Also to confirm, this is an issue with rosalynporterrugs.wordpress.com yes? Wanted to make sure I did not confuse it with any other sites on your account. Thanks for the additional info!
-
Yes, that’s the correct site.
It only has 1 page, so it is affecting the whole site. I’ve just tried again on my laptop and using the browser on my phone, but didn’t have any success. Everything is still just appearing on the left. -
Hi! I had a look at your site, but I don’t think I see the same thing as you. I noticed your site is private, so I don’t want to share images of it, but the site seems to display correctly on my end.
I wonder if it’s something browser-related. Are you using the same browser both on your laptop and mobile phone? If so, what browser is that?
Do you see any difference when using a different browser? -
Hi, I am using the same browser on my laptop and phone – both Chrome.
I just tried Safari on my laptop and encountered a different issue – all of the text has disappeared. It also looks like the coloured boxes are off. The top one (picture of a rug behind it) looks like it’s roughly the right size and in the right place, but the second one (cream box) is way longer than it should be. Then below that it looks like some boxes are right and some are wrong.
What browser are you using? Is there a way I can send you screenshots?
-
Yes, would you please use https://snipboard.io/ to share a screenshot of what you’re seeing?

With Chrome: https://snipboard.io/sN5b2A.jpg
With Safari: https://snipboard.io/eJT71I.jpg
-
Ohh, okay, I see you’re talking about what you see in the editor, not on the site itself. Thanks for the screenshots!
The site displays fine, but I can see the issue when editing the page. It might be related to your theme or a broader problem with the editor.
Have you changed the theme after creating the homepage with another theme?
-
No, I created the page using this theme and haven’t changed it at any time.
I don’t know if it’s relevant, but this is the first time I’ve logged on for a while – probably since Christmas, maybe before

Hi Mizzie,
Here are a couple of things to try.
- Select your hero image and check out the block properties in the right sidebar. Is there a width set?
- Try selecting the column/group that the hero block is located within. You can do this by clicking the icon in the top left of the block while the hero is selected. Does the group/column have a width set in the block properties?
- Could the issue be a browser extension? Try logging in using an Incognito Window in Chrome or Safari (ctrl+shift+n) and going to the page you are trying to edit to see if the issue persists. If so, you may want to try disabling extensions that block parts of the page on WordPress.com.
Also, we might be able to help further will a full-page screenshot. Here’s a way to do it in Chrome, or you can also download a browser extension called Nimbus.

Hi,
I think I’m going to need some help with that – I don’t find WordPress easy to use at all and don’t really understand the majority of your message.
1. What is a hero image? Whereabouts on the page will I find it?
I’ve tried selecting the top block and scrolling through the sidebar on the right-hand side of the screen, but can’t find anywhere that mentions width. There is a dimensions section, but that just includes ‘padding’ and ‘minimum height of cover’.2. What is a hero block? Where will I find that?
Again, I can’t see anything about block properties in the sidebar or anywhere else.3. I tried the incognito window, it didn’t work.
I don’t think the issue is with an unexpected change in the column/block properties as I get different issues when using different browsers – 1 character-wide blocks on Chrome and no text and wrong block lengths on Safari. I think the problem is something else, but haven’t got a clue what it might be.

I’m not sure if it is, but could you let us know what operating system (and version) and browser version for both Chrome and Safari that you’re using? Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.

Problems like this usually are from either a bug in a particular browser or from using a browser or operating system that’s out of date. Out of date systems aren’t updated to use the new technologies found in software updates (like updates to the WordPress software) and can sometimes have problems with rendering things properly, which I think might be the issue here. Once we know what versions you’re using we’ll have a much better idea. :)
We’ll wait to hear back from you!

This maybe makes more sense – I’ve been putting off a software update…
I’m currently using MacOS Monterey version 12.3, but I can update to 12.3.1 – I’ll get that running and see what happens.
Otherwise, I’m using:
– Chrome: 100.0.4896.88 (Official Build) (x86_64)
– Safari: 15.4 (17613.1.17.1.6)
(I rarely use Safari – just when something doesn’t work properly on Chrome) -
I just updated to Monterey 12.3.1 and there’s no change – it’s all still 1 character wide down the left hand side of the page

Hi there,
Thank you for clarifying. I checked your page on this end (also using Chrome on my Mac) and one thing I noticed is that all the blocks for that page are contained within one column of a larger Columns Block.
Was this intentional? My understanding is that if you plan to have single column of content then you would not need the Columns Block at all.
In this video I experimented (with a copy of the page from your site) and if I remove the content from that column block and move it to the top level it displays correctly. You can see the video at this link: https://d.pr/v/MYXrOt
If you try this on the draft page you have created, does it resolve the issue?

Hi,
Thank you – that worked!
I used an existing template to create the page and just filled everything in with my own content, so have no idea what the original format was or what sort of blocks it used. But it does make sense that if I only have a single column then I don’t need Column Blocks. I created the site a while ago and haven’t done anything to it for a while, it just suddenly appeared different when I logged back on to start working on it again.
Thanks again!
