Edit page has very different appearance than actual page

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there anyway to get my edit page to more closely resemble how my actual page would look like?

Issues with spacing, captions, and placement of text are very different in my edit window then they are when I look at the page. Should I try another browser (I am using chrome).

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This isn’t a browser related issue. Are you copying and pasting text from a word processing program like WORD?

You need to be cautious and use the correct approach when copying and pasting from any document created in a word processor.

Microsoft Word is a word processing program that’s not compliant with web standards. The result of copy and pasting from Microsoft Word into the Tiny MCE editor in WordPress blogs can be unexpected, and contain a lot of formatting code that’s not compliant unless you know how to use the built-in features in the Visual editor for using Word cleanly. Use icon 5 or icon 6 (WORD) as appropriate in the Visual editor Row 2 if you are copying and pasting.

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/

If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.

If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines.

P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

For image alignment issues see here please > http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#alignment

The alignment icons in the WordPress editor are for aligning text; they are not for aligning images. They are used to achieve wrapping text around images on either the right or left hand side, or to display an image that’s centered without text on either side of it.

Align-left means position left, with the rest of the content wrapping around the right side of the image.

Align-right means position right, with the rest of the content wrapping around the left side of the image.

Align-center means position center, with no wrap-around (= the rest of the content below the image).

If the text beside the images does not occupy the same amount of space that the image beside it does then the text wrapping will continue and the images and text that follow will have a staggered appearance.

To prevent the staggered effect what you do is insert the following snippet of code into the Text (HTML) editor after each image/text pair:
    <div style="clear:both;"></div>

Thank you timethief for your feedback; however, I am using the direct editor and not using word. The center, right, or left alignment is not the issue I’m having (I don’t think). Specifically, the editor will show that a phrase is perhaps 2 spaces below an image, but when I look at the site, the phrase will be wrapped around a photo.

Please give us a direct link to a post which is not behaving as you intend, and tell us what you wanted it to look like and how specifically it turned out differently. If there is anything unusual, we will find it. If what you want is not possible, or possible using a different method, we will tell you.

Hey Raincoaster, Thanks! The link is:
    http://the-life-study.org/2014/02/09/5-ways-to-get-all-the-motivaiton-youll-ever-need-for-exercise-and-for-life/

For the most part I was able to work around it; but on the first image it has subtext (actually put as alt text) as small, while the other captions are very large. Do you know of a way to change this?

Further, on the editor it shows that the text below the third image–“The most fulfilling feeling for a man (and probably anyone) is knowing you can provide for and protect those you love.” — is below and centered to the left, but when it is updated it is changes to being in line with the image, no matter how many times I put a space in between.

Thank you for your help raincoaster!

    Stephen
