Edit post and page title
-
Hello, I have recently opened a site, and can find no way to modify the text of a post or page title. I have tried editing the template and the changes get done on the edit page, but when I go back to the post they do not apply and it just stays as it is, with massive letters. Can anyone suggest anything? Thank you.

Hi, your theme is Independent Publisher 2. This theme has some font size choices when you go to the Customizer under Appearance > Customize > Fonts.
There’s some more information about that here:

Hi, your site http://fablesofgiles.wordpress.com/ currently uses the classic theme Independent Publisher 2. Should you wish to modify theme templates, we could suggest changing to one of the Site Editor-compatible themes, which will make the Site Editor available to you under Appearance > Editor (beta).
In case of need, we do also have a guide for the Site Editor:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-editor/And you can find compatible themes here:

I just tried changing the font in the customizer but no change on the post. No changes seem to affect the title

Thanks. Just tried it with Geologist Cream from that list. Appearance-beta editor-template-editor, still no go. I change the size and alignment of the title, save twice and then it says site updated but no result. Any ideas? Am stuck with massive left aligned titles at the moment.

I’m showing the font Lobster Two set as your site title, which is the same font you set in the Customizer:
If you don’t see changes immediately, you may want to clear your browser cache as that can retain minor changes like fonts, etc.
I hope that helps!

Is this the same problem you’re having in your other thread?
https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/edit-post-and-page-title/
If so, please keep your request to a single thread so we’re not duplicating efforts there. Thanks!

Thanks for clarifying, I’ve merged the two threads to avoid any confusion.
I don’t see any published pages on your site (just an empty homepage at the moment) but are you trying to set up your site to appear similar to what you see in the demo here? https://independentpublisher2demo.wordpress.com/I see you have a draft blog post that is not yet published, but when it is published you would like to have it (and all future blog posts) appear on the homepage of your site? Thanks for the additional info!

Hello. Yes I am working on the site at the moment. I have not managed to edit the post template satisfactorily yet, so as to shrink the title and have it in the centre, but I hope to be able to fix that later. But one thing I would like to change now is the theme: I have chosen Independent Publisher 2 for the moment, but it is mixed with Lobster somehow, so that the homepage is in this font. I tried the Lobster theme and changed it but it seems to have stuck somehow. However, this does not happen with the 2023 theme, as I just tried that. Can you suggest anything to homologize the theme so I only have Independent Publisher? Thank you for your help!

Hi again,
Looking at your site history I see about 10 theme switches in the last few days, which can definitely lead to some confusion as content is added to your site with each change.
Will it help if we reset the site entirely so it uses only the demo content from the Independent Publisher theme? This will delete any content you have now, so you will need to re-add that content again. However it will also assure that your site is set up exactly like the demo, and will give you a head start on customizing it since you will not need to un-do anything from the previous theme changes.
Are you interested in this option? Do you have the images and text you added to the site now saved to your computer so they can be safely deleted (when I add the demo content) or do you need some time to save what you have on the site now?
Thanks for confirming.

Hello. That sounds like the best thing. I have saved the content. Please go ahead and reset the site. Thank you.

Hi @gilesearly! I went to add content from Independent Publisher, but it looks like you’ve switched to another theme that doesn’t include demo content. If I restart this you just end up with a blank site, and that doesn’t seem ideal.
I have another idea: would you be willing to add a little of your own demo content? It will make trying on themes easier.
It looks like you’ll want a blog (with entries by date) so to set that up, please do each of these steps. I’m including links where there’s more info that could help:
- For now, start by showing the latest posts on the front page. That’s done here. Choose “Your Latest Posts” and save.
- Add a new post here: https://wordpress.com/post
- Give it a title, a little text, and a featured image
- Give it a category or tags
- Publish the post. Bear in mind this won’t work with drafts. So if you need to make the site private first for now, here’s how. Note you can also backdate the posts if you want to. Then publish.
- Repeat so you have a few posts published.
A front page can show your latest posts, or it can be some extra front page stuff with a few posts listed below, or it may not show posts at all. But I’m gathering from the themes you tried that posts on the front page would work well. And I think if you try these six steps, you’ll have an easier time trying themes and be more likely to find one that fits well with your content.
Bear in mind, too, most modern themes can take some tailoring through the site editor. You just don’t want to spend a lot of time fine-tuning adjustments before you’ve picked a theme. So once you’ve settled on a theme, if you want to adjust some of its features, we can help.

Hello. Thank you for your help and instructions. I have followed the steps, I think, added some content and published it. I hope this will enable the solution you propose. Otherwise, perhaps it would solve things to start the whole thing again from scratch.

Ok, I see you now have the Twenty Twenty-Three theme active, and you’ve added a little content!
Do I understand correctly that you would still want to reduce the size of the post and page title in particular? I took the liberty of recording a video showing how to reduce the size of a blog post title in the Site Editor – you can view that here:
https://supportmediatech.files.wordpress.com/2023/01/editposttitlesize.mp4
The video shows opening the Site Editor, then selecting the “Single” template (which applies to blog posts), and making changes to the post title. Please note – no changes from the video were actually saved.
Just to note, if you were to instead select the “Page” template in the Site Editor, you’d still see the title referred to as the “Post title”, rather than “Page title” – it’s functionally the same thing.

Hello, thank you for taking the trouble to record that video. I have not followed and applied the demonstration completely yet, but following your other points, I have seen that modifications to the template show up on the site, if not on the edit page, and I have learned how to add pages to the option bar on the homepage. But the posts are not shown here, and I have not found yet how to access them as a visitor.

Are you talking about the link to “Giles’s fables” in your site menu? Clicking that takes me to https://fablesofgiles.wordpress.com/giless-fables/ where I can read your fables there.
Are you expecting some other content there? If so, please let us know what you’re not seeing so we can best advise.
Thanks!

Hello, I wonder if you can help me with something. About symbol type on the finished page: all my content is entered and edited with quotation marks of the kind “”. But as the content is seen and presented, curiously sometimes they come up as “” and others as «» . Do you have an idea why this could be?
