“Edit post” button *not a feature* on WordPress.com?!?!?!?
-
Just got off chat support, where it was *confirmed* that “management has decided” that on wordpress.com, there is no “edit post” button from the front side when logged in as admin. This is a feature that is still available on wordpress.org, available on staging sites that are set to “coming soon” on wordpress.com, but not available on live wordpress.com sites.
In order to edit a post, I have to manually go to the admin panel > posts and SEARCH OUT THE POST.
OR, I can view the source code, find the post ID, and then input that in the edit URL.
OR, I can install a code snippet plugin and use a small php code to add it.
WHY IS A BASIC FEATURE UNAVAILABLE?
This creates a horrible user experience, wastes time, and is a backward design. The whole thing feels anti-customer.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
The edit post link feature is theme dependent, as some themes still have the ability to edit posts from the front page (like my own), while others do not. You’re using the Elementor plugin and theme, which being third-party, most likely does not allow that particular feature.
You can try a few things to add the post link feature. Here is a link to WPBeginner, which explains a few ways you can add the link:
https://wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/save-time-by-adding-a-quick-edit-button-in-wordpress-posts/
Also, there is a plugin (albeit a bit outdated) that reintroduces the link to the bottom of your posts.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/edit-post-link/
I want to preface that these are not WordPress.com-endorsed options, and I would try them with caution and definitely back up your site before trying them. But, they may provide the solution you are looking for.
Hope this helps. -
Thanks so much, but it doesn’t seem like it’s a theme issue. I can see the edit button on my staging site which also has the same Elementor theme. Customer support confirmed that when the site is in “coming soon” mode, the button is there, but once it’s live, it’s not. They said it had nothing to do with my theme, and was just how wordpress.com works. The edit post button is a feature native to .org, but not .com.
Perhaps support is wrong. But the whole thing feels backwards.
Thank you for your suggested workarounds. I got it working via a php script added to the code snippet plugin. Now I have 2 dashboards to jump back and forth between, but that’s better than manually finding a post to edit it.

Hi! In case you’d want an alternative to the PHP script, we have one option that might be useful for you:
The admin interface option lets you switch between the classic WP Admin appearance and the default WordPress.com interface for things like pages and blog posts. I tested it on my site to be sure, and on my test site it does include the Edit Post button in the top bar too, when I’m viewing a blog post.
