Edit screen blank
-
My site https://evadillnerblog.files.wordpress.com is showing a blank screen when I go to edit post. At the bottom I can see cookie text, but impossible to click on link. I’ve tried Safari, Chrome, checked pop ups etc etc. It happened before I upgraded to latest MacOs as well, but then all I wanted to change was minimal and I figured the site would heal up. Not so.
I’m now running MacOS Monterey v 12.01 on a MacBook Pro 2016
What is the problem? I can see preview but editing draws a blank. WordPress appears to be not responding.
The post I want to edit is this one

Please try these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

I already cleared history and caches. I can access the edit post on my iPhone. But on my computer going to edit, screen pulls up blank in both Safari and Chrome. I also tested with all the different user agent with all the browsers and ipad, iphone and mac and windows. Blank!
I have no extensions.
I also get a message that webpage is not responding when I try to reload.
I discovered a way around by going into the admin page and in the list of post under … copy post, then I could edit. But if I save and exit I can’t pull it up again. -
That seems very odd.
What is the name of the post or page you’re editing when that happens?

These are blank in edit mode

Hmm that seems odd since it’s not typical for some editor pages to load, but not others. When I try from our end all post editors load without issue (I’m using Chrome on my Mac as well) so it’s difficult for us to understand why it’s not loading for you. It’d be easier if it did not load for us as well, so we can see the issue firsthand.
Out of curiosity, I noticed that the two posts that do not load for you have PDF embed blocks in them, the 3rd you mention does not have this block. Aside from the posts you mention, are there others you can’t embed? Do they also have PDFs? On the other side of the coin, if a post does not have a PDF in it, are you able to edit without issue?
Thanks for the additional info!

Good detective work. I checked back on older posts. The ones that go blank have pdf link embed. I use the file block.
Very odd -
Hi there,
Since we narrowed it down to the embedded PDFs, I tend to believe that it has something to do with the way each of the browsers you’re using renders the embedded PDF.
Can you please check if you have a third-party PDF viewer installed on your system? Also, check the browsers extensions in case you have a PDF viewer installed that bypasses the built-in one.

Apparently Safari has a built in pdf viewer. I reset my default viewer from Preview to Adobe Acrobat Reader. In Safari I still get a blank if I try to edit a post with embedded pdf, but it comes up ok in Chrome.
Apple does tend to have strict privacy blocks, for example in Preview it simply won’t open links that go to online pdf. In Acrobat you not only see where it links to, if it has a question it asks, ok to open?
Not keen on migrating to another web browser, but if I do, what works best with WordPress? Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. I used Firefox and Thunderbird before Apple improved their mail. But that was a long time ago – before Chrome -
Hi there,
The open source WordPress software, as well as WordPress.com specifically, is supported in the two most recent versions of Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari and Opera. Personally I use Firefox, and it works great.
It looks like this is a bug on our end with the file block that only affects the Safari browser, though. Our developers are aware of it, but I’m afraid I’m not able to tell you when it will be fixed. We’ll update here when that happens, but meanwhile it looks like using another is the only option for now if you want to edit a post that contains a PDF embed.
